This project was started with the ultimate aim of having fantastic looks and great performance coupled with superb handling and braking.
To start with a suitable shell had to be found for the perfect base in which to build the car, the usual MGB’s had like most a chequered past as well as decades of the Great British weather so to find a rust free example quite a task. Eventually finding the shell that had only four previous keepers and had not been driven in the British winters and salt and remained garaged throughout it’s life. The shell was then completely stripped and sent for soda blasting, the blasting was limited to all parts except the panels, this was done to reduce the risk to damaging the panels during blasting, the panels themselves were taken back to metal by hand.
Once the shell was completely stripped of all paint it was thoroughly inspected for any signs of corrosion. Although the car had led a cherished life it was still susceptible to some corrosion and therefore the offending material was removed and replaced with new. Now having a fully rust free shell it was then subjected to the correct course of conversion to enable the fitment of the V8 engine and transmission. This was done just the same way as the factory did before the shell change later in the 70’s.
Now the shell is complete it went through the process of rust prevention and painting. The shell was fully sealed at every single joint (this was never done when cars were built in the 70’s) it was then etched, followed by 3 coats of primer, 2 coats of metallic black basecoat and 3 layers of lacquer. The car was painted inside and out and the whole underside including the inner wing areas before the wings were fitted were coated in a specialist rubberised spray coating and painted in body colour.
The project then moved onto the suspension with major upgrades, this included a full 5 link rear suspension setup with fully adjustable AVO coil over suspension. The front suspension was upgraded to a fully adjustable coil over configuration.
The correct rear axle was fitted complete with a V8 3. 7:1 ratio differential, the rear brakes were fully replaced with all brand new parts and hubs overhauled with new bearings and seals. The front brakes maintained the V8 braking with fully reconditioned calipers, uprated drilled and slotted EBC brake discs coupled with Green Stuff brake pads. All the front hubs were overhauled with new bearings, seals etc.
A reconditioned steering rack and new track rod ends fitted, this is attached to a later type collapsible steering column.
A 36 D V8 engine was sourced with a compression ratio of 9. 35:1, this was a low mileage engine that had little use. The engine was sent away for overhauling however on inspection it was found that the engine was in remarkable condition and required no work so the engine was fully reconditioned with the bores re honed and all new pistons, bearings and seals fitted. The cylinder heads were ported for better gas flow and the camshaft was replaced with a Kent fast road cam. A decision had not been made on the carburation therefore a stock Edelbrock 4 barrel carburettor was fitted for the interim.
The engine is coupled up to an LT77 gearbox, this was stripped, inspected and rebuilt with new seals.
The car floor, bulkhead and tunnel areas were fitted with heat resistant sound deadening material then professionally fitted custom carpets in wine colour. The headlining was also custom made in perforated anthracite. The door cards are also custom made in black leather as well as the centre console. The dashboard retained the original 1970’s look and was refurbished in a new crackle finish, new clocks and gauges were fitted with the addition of an oil temp gauge, amp gauge, volt gauge and analogue clock, the tachometer and speedometer retain the 1970 chrome bezel look and were custom made for this V8.
No seats have been fitted, this again is due to the final look had not been decided on and will rest with the new owner.
Some of the exterior chrome has not been fitted especially the bumpers, this was due to a decision had not been made on the final look of the car, either the classic chrome in all it’s glory or the more sporty sebring style, this decision can be ultimately made by the new owner as with the other finishing touches so that they can ultimately put their mark on the finished project.
