Description
1990 Volvo 740 GL Estate - fitted with V8, one off build!
Hi and welcome to the listing for my Volvo 740 Estate with a twist!
An absolutely unique vehicle having been fitted with a Rover 3. 5 V8 from an SD1 but retaining the original AW71 automatic gearbox, the only known conversion of this type in the UK and quite a complex undertaking that was completed in 2018.
Only 2 previous owners, built by the previous owner who cherished the car for 26 years.
Featured in Practical Classics magazine September 2021.
The conversion seems to have been done to a very high standard and it all amounts to working really well out on the road. The V8 sounds amazing on full chat but equally as nice just plodding along. A very comfortable cruiser that can turn into a bit of a bruiser when you put your foot down :)
Exterior wise it is pretty much how you would expect a standard 740 to look. The bodywork is straight and solid, the same goes for the underneath, however the paintwork could be improved in areas (nearside doors and front wing) if you wished, or simply use as is - please see all photos.
Interior is a lovely place to be and incredibly comfortable - probably the most comfortable car I've owned. The seats show virtually no wear and are in such good condition, they defy their age and the mileage which is showing as just under 213k (although this is largely irrelevant due to the conversion).
Bad points: odometer stopped counting miles a few weeks ago (common Volvo fault), a guide is included to resolve this, speedometer still works as it should. There is sometimes a pulsing rotational noise under braking/ cornering but brakes and steering seem fine.
Comes with multiple spare keys, an impressive history file which contains: service book showing 31 entries, complete book pack & wallet (including lifetime car cassette!), old tax discs, old MOT certificates, a large quantity of service invoices and parts receipts, Haynes workshop manual for the Volvo 740/ 760 and also for Rover 3500.
I purchased this as I do like something a bit different, and I've enjoyed having a go in it however I need to try and rationalise my collection a bit, hence reluctantly putting it up for sale.
I can assist with delivery for a reasonable cost once the car has been paid for.
Any questions, feel free to send me a message.
Thanks for looking.
