Description

Old Skool Hot Rod - Plymouth Business Coupe 1950, fitted 350 Chevrolet V8 with 3-speed auto box and Chevy (or Ford...) rear axle, built in the US, probably in the 1970s or early '80s. The double wishbone front end and coil springs were standard fit, but it now has a pair of telescopic dampers, plus a couple more at the rear to go with the leaf springs. It drives surprisingly well and steers nicely, which when I finally got it back on the road, came as a very pleasant surprise. Body looks to have been made out of very hefty 1950s steel (the good stuff), and is still amazingly solid, as it the huge chassis on which it sits. The SBC engine was totally overhauled by ASD in Doncaster (rebore, new pistons, crank ground, new shells, oil pump, valves and guides, cam bearings etc, so is effectively new...) box shifts smoothly and kicks down like it should, the speedo, rev counter and essential gauges all work, as does the Locomotive horn... The local Auto Wizard has been right through the car and sorted most things, like the brakes which have all been overhauled, including new Wilwood master cylinder (the shoes still need bedding in), plus a host of minor things which usually get overlooked. There are inevitably a couple of details left to do (vacuum wipers are all there, and I'll connect them if I get time, or a conversion to electric is available via the usual channels), and it needs a handbrake cable, but the rest is up to your personal taste; or.. you could pretty much go California Dreamin' straight away. The moody light in the pictures flatters the paint slightly, but the matt finish was obviously intentional when it was done some time ago and it does suit the car, and the extensive amounts of Chrome/ Nickel plate is still pretty good, as are all the original badges. In all, a really nice, unusual, super cool time-warp rod that more than keeps up with the modern stuff. Based near Louth Lincs. All the badges, grille, bumpers and trims are completely intact, which is not usually the case when someone creates a hot rod. That makes it an ultimate sleeper. As a late 40s design It also had reasonably advanced front suspension, sporting a pair of double wishbones and coil springs rather than the previous beam axles. The builder thoughtfully added telescopic dampers front and rear, which makes a big difference to the ride.
