Now in a private collection in Barcelona. This super sport 1988 Bimota DB1 SR racer is the last and hottest of the DB1 Bimota-Ducatis. Bimota boosted the power of the Ducati Pantah engine to 80 HP on the street version of the DB1 SR; with a full 84 HP at 9, 200 RPM, the race version dominated the Italian Supertwin championships in 1987, winning eight of nine races under rider Tiziano Bombardi. The DB1 SR roadster was not a whole lot slower than the factory racer, and it won lucky test riders and owners over with its peerless combination of perfect handling in all conditions and quick, willing power across a broad rev range. Only 153 were built, making this a rare motorcycle and one that is remembered with tremendous affection.
Its direct competition was Ducati's own 750 F1 range of road-legal production racers, but even these classic Ducatis were outclassed by their rivals from Rimini, as the quality of their construction and attention to detail was superior to every other motorcycle built. This was reflected in their cost, of course, and as the saying goes, "you get what you pay for." What one paid for with the Bimota DB1 SR was the full attention of a small factory of speed-mad Italian craftsmen who were dedicated to bringing the finest workmanship and rider experience possible to a sports motorcycle.
While their road-riding owners certainly appreciated and were willing to pay for such quality, in truth, it was only on the racetrack where the stunning handling, braking, and acceleration of the machine could be exploited to the fullest. Period testers understood what the DB1 SR was about: "We found that the DB1 SR is one of the most enjoyable and exciting motorcycles we have ever ridden on a track. Its stability is perfect in any and all conditions; it takes practically no effort to brush the asphalt with your knees. It's another exciting true Italian-style road racer." This lovely 1988 Bimota DB1 SR still delivers on every front with its gorgeous design by Federico Martini, performance that should satisfy any rider, and styling that delights any onlooker.
