it has been known in classic circles for some time now that the w123 e class is a phenomenal machine. Which represents the apex of mercedes-benz build quality, durability and mechanical expertise. The accolades levelled at the w123 are certainly founded.
these cars were positively over-engineere. When new and that's telling today when you come across an example such as this one. Despite reaching nearly 145, 000 miles (just run in of course) this car appears in nearly new condition and has an excellent service history to back up it's extremely tidy interior, exterior and mechanical condition.
on the road this lovely cherished example finished in sand beige is incredibly straight forward to pilot, simply popping into "d" on the gate of the 4 speed automatic gearbox and applying a little throttle, sees you effortlessly pull away. There are none of the clonks or lurches associate. With worn prop shaft flexible discs or gearbox/ engine mounting problems as the drive is taken up with the minimum of fuss or slack.
the historic registered car is powered by a 2. 3-litre four-pot, which later found fame as the bottom half of the 190e cosworth unit. There's 136 bhp to exploit and considering the size of this e class you perhaps wouldn't expect much in terms of performance. However, this 2. 3 litre w123 is actually pretty sprightly.
the revs steadily climb towards the top of the gauge as the e class squats under power. Sensing you are in the mood for some driving fun/ speed. the box holds its lower ratio right to the red line before changing up. It has to be said there's more than enough grunt on tap to reach and exceed the speed limit in a very respectable time. Despite there appearance and solidity these cars aren't actually as heavily as you might assume, especially when compared to modern equivalents, and therefore even the smallest engine units fitted aren't any where near lethargic as you might expect.
this example is superb and drives every bit as well as it looks, under the stewardship of its first owner of several years and enthusiast owned since, it has clearly lead a charmed existence. The engine bay is honest and true. For anyone looking for a solid and highly-presentable w123, this one is most certainly due full consideration. there are no fewer than 26 stamps in the maintenance/ service history booklet covering the period of time from 1983 to 2008, thereafter maintenance etc is evidenced by invoices. exceeding £1600 in value. Since august 2008, the car has covered a mere 12 k miles. The most recent repairs include:- engine & gear service, new shock absorbers and brakes service.
the gleaming sand beige paint work is of original condition. there are no dents, scratches, scuffs or blemishes to be found and no evidence of rust/ rot. The chrome work is also very good. The mexican hat alloys sit on matching tyre. With plenty tread. The mercedes is part of a collection of classics kept and maintained in a heated & fully enclose. Water tight environment.
this benz is in super all round original condition and a beautiful refined driver turning heads wherever it travels and no wonder given the car having retained it's original appearance and condition.
all body panels are straight and true. There are no dents, scabs of rust/ rot. the sand beige paintwork is in fine order providing a good shine. There are no scratches, scuffs or marks. the car is water and wind tight. The original mexican hat alloy wheels with matching tyres are in great shape ( two spare mexican hat alloys with excellent tyres come with the car). the chrome work is also excellent and complete. In essence, this is a truly fine example of the classic mercedes-benz w123 230e. With a fully documented history file.
the interior is also in very good order, original, clean and uncluttered. There are no tears, unsightly scuffs or marks, signs of wear or discoloration. All is in tact, functioning as intended, comfortable and pleasant to the eye. it is a spacious and pleasant environment to be within with no unsightly aftermarket additions.
the chassis and undercarriage is clean and solid in all areas, as are the floor pans etc. There is no evidence of rot/ rust anywhere.
the boot - again very clean, solid and un-cluttered.
engine bay - consistent with the rest of the car. Original and un-tampere. With.
engine - the engine is reliable, agile and responsive and smooth, starting the first time of asking every time.
transmission - the 4 speed auto gear box is like the engine, agile, responsive and smooth through the changes.
brakes - spot on ! no delay or annoying squeaks etc.
recent full service and oil change completed.

this lovely w123 was first registered in the uk on 26/ 05/ 1983 and has had merely 4 keepers in its 41+ year history. The present registered keeper has been so for the past 15+ years. The car is part of a private collection and only used sparingly in dry/ warm weather conditions. The mercedes as it presents today, is a credit to it's keepers and the marque. It is also a clear investment opportunity aligned to in-expensive and worry free classic car ownership, enjoyment with natural pride of ownership and as stated a piece of quality over engineered german/ mercedes motoring history.
the current total mileage is 144762 miles equates to merely 3530 miles for each of the car's 41+ years.
