Commencing in 1885 Peugeot began to find its feat in the transportation market, with the introduction of cycles. Amongst the worlds oldest surviving vehicle manufacturers Peugeot began producing motorised vehicles in 1889 with the production of a steam powered Tri-car but soon abandoned steam in favour of the internal combustion engine. From the early 1890s onwards Peugeot established themselves as one of the highest quality vehicle manufacturers worldwide.
From 1902 onwards, it was evident to see that Peugeot was copying the Mercedes built vehicles with their vehicles featuring honeycomb style radiators offering supreme water cooling and reinforced timber chassis. Furthermore the 9HP twin cylinder engine as shown in this example featured mechanically operated inlet and exhaust valves. The cars were famed for their reliability.
The vehicle shown here ‘A221’ is a fabulous example of the 1904 9HP 2 Cylinder variant. These cars feature a conventional pedal layout, easy to master gearbox with 3 forward speeds and reverse and drive via a central propshaft. This example shows original coachwork with beautifully aged hand paintwork, the addition of a windscreen is of huge benefit for any November runs and magneto ignition has negated the need for charging of batteries.
‘A221’ is a vehicle that is well known to those in the Veteran Car Club of Great Britain having been owned by a past president of the club. The car was presumed to be kept in dry storage from the 1950s until the 1990s when it participated in the 1996 centenary London to Brighton Run. After this it was again stored until 2010. Because of the cars long periods of inactivity, it presents as a remarkably original example and one of only 4 survivors worldwide, 3 of which are dated by the VCC. In recent years the car has been subject to an engine overhaul by a well known specialist and very recently a gearbox rebuild and recommissioning by NP Veteran Engineering. Recent works included the addition of a ring gear to the flywheel so the fitment of an electric starter would be very easily achievable for a new owner, not that it’s needed as it starts very easily on the handle.
