This 1977 Escort 1100L is a highly original, rust-free 2-door example that would form the perfect base for a rally or fast-road build, or could be used as-is.
Admittedly, with no previous paperwork, not much is known about the life of this car before it was brought to the UK in 2021. What is clear is that it’s a German-built car, first registered on the continent in October 1977. It looks to have been used sparingly over its 44-year life before being imported to the UK and purchased/ registered by our customer in September 2021.
As is very common with these Escorts, he bought the car with the sole intention of building a fast-road rally replica. However, the charm, originality and scarceness of the base 2-door Escort won him over and the car was put into a storage facility and used infrequently while he decided what to do with it. Just under 3 years later the decision was made… to build a Capri instead.
The Escort was taken out of storage in August and has completed approx 250 miles since, being driven to various shows. Using the car ourselves, the only things we’ve noticed are: the NSR brake is binding slightly; and following the car up the M40 we saw a couple puffs of smoke after over-run, which would suggest the valve stem seals are still the originals. Other than this, the car drives excellently with everything functioning as it should - even the original Grundig radio - and can be used as-is, if you so wish.
Structurally, the car is in exceptional condition with only one very small bubble forming on the O/ S rear arch and no signs of previous dodgy repairs anywhere. The floors all look to be original throughout and totally rust free, as does the engine bay, subframe and inner wings with no signs of accident damage. Cosmetically, there is one dent on the OS rear arch lip and a scuff on the NS front but otherwise the paint is good with no particularly cheap or dull finishes. The interior is also totally original and in fantastic order, all the trim fits nicely with no holes or broken parts.
Overall, this Escort is a very good, untouched example that has thankfully avoided the UK roads and climate. The car could be a more complete alternative to a newly-built body shell to base your rally/ fast-road build upon, or could simply be used and improved in its charming, original form.
