Description
Bertie is an original right hand drive type 2 split screen kombi bus from South Africa that has been fully refurbished by the previous owner, the van has a 1600cc engine with electronic ignition and fire suppression system and a new battery fitted. Bertie has curtains and new seats as well and being blue and cream mix of paintwork, everything works and he drives well, albeit for a 57 year old bus but that is what your are buying.
Bertie has 1 set of keys however the doors do not always work, but that is due to wear and his age, their is a few minor spots of surface rust due to age as you would expect but he is in very good condition for a 1967 van.
We have the original VW birth certificate with him, however we have never bothered to change his number plate and age with DVLA, however this is easily done if the new owner so wishes to apply to DVLA.
Including us, their has been three owners in the UK and as far as we are aware only one in SA as he was a school bus for his life out their, the milage is not confirmed but we have been told it is the original speedo.
He comes with a few spares hand brake cable as they stretch, and also a roof rack wood and chrome, however we have never fitted this but it comes with him anyway, other than that he is as you see him. Bertie has never been out in the rain either on the drive or driving, although with those windscreen wipers you would never ever want to drive him in the rain.
Bertie is garaged all year and only comes out in the summer or spring, apart from nice days in the winter when he is brought out onto the drive to turn over the engine, however he is always put away even in the summer in his garage.
We are selling Bertie only to a person we feel will look after him, as you never really own a classic car, you are really just a custodian to pass him onto the next person whether that is 1 or 30 years time.
We have retired and are traveling a lot so really Bertie needs a new home and people to move onto and someone who will look after him and take him out to show him off. Bertie was made or started life in the VW Wolfsburg factory, however as on his birth certificate his colour can not been confirmed, this we have been told was due to the Export Embargo on the South Africa due to apartheid. So to get around this VW decided to ship vans not completed to RSA and finish them off in the factory out their, hence his colour was red and cream in RSA.
Bertie was bought by a school to be used as their bus, and so he lived their for most of his life until a man found him at the back of a gym at the school, unused and looking the worst for wear paintwork wise.
He was exported back to the UK were he was stripped and started to be refurbished before the guy ran out of time and money, a new owner purchased Bertie and completed his restoration and carried out the work to get him into the condition he is in.
We purchased Bertie in 28th October 2017 and we have taken care of him since, he needs constant attention as all old car do, but that is half the appeal.
