Description

1960 Jaguar XK150 3. 8 SE FHC

The XK150 first appeared in 1957, a clear descendant of the original XK120 of 1948. Unfortunately this obvious connection with a near decade old design, plus questions over whether this last XK remained a true sports car as opposed to a more luxurious GT have lead some “bar room experts” to be somewhat dismissive of the model. We, however, would argue that such people are rather missing the point and, in the case of the example we have here, are in danger of missing a real gem too.

The car left Jaguar’s Browns Lane factory on the 22nd March, 1960 fitted with the 3. 8 litre version of the classic XK straight six in SE specification. The early years of the car’s life are reasonably well documented, before it disappeared from view for an extended period from about 1965. The car reappeared with a new owner in the mid-1990s who placed it with Fulbridge Engineering of Essex for a two year, £125, 000 restoration.

The restoration work is well documented in a large history file that accompanies the car. A Heritage Certificate dated 24th April, 1998 is also present and confirms the Jaguar’s authenticity as a full matching numbers car.

Coming to its current keeper in June 2015, the car has during his ownership benefitted from a number of well chosen refinements including uprated Coopercraft brakes, a higher ratio differential, uprated radiator and fan, an alternator conversion and EZ electric power steering.

Now presenting quite superbly in Jaguar Racing Green over a Suede Green interior, this XK150 has proved both an award winner and a magazine star, the latter coming courtesy of an eight page article in the April/ May 2019 edition of Classic Jaguar Magazine.

In conclusion, a truly exceptional example of a car that successfully blends the visceral appeal of its sporting forebears with a good helping of real world practicality, while also being a little more discreet than its iconic but rather more flamboyant successor. Maybe it’s time to move past the hearsay and experience this slightly lesser known Big Cat for yourself…
