Description

Purchased new by the Italian ambulance service in 1974, based in Macerata, a very quiet Italian village, it saw very little use over the years. Gradually superseded by newer models, it must have wormed its way into their affections as it remained tucked away in a quiet corner of the station for years. By the time it emerged from hibernation in 2015, less than 7, 000kms had passed beneath its wheels during its four-decade life.
Then spotted online for the sale, the van was then imported into the UK in 2016 before embarking on a thorough recommissioning; while the gentle Italian climate had preserved the bodywork in remarkably good condition – the paintwork is largely original - the mechanical components needed bringing back to life. Sussex Sports Cars, Lewes a renowned car restoration company, went about the works refurbishing and replacing parts as necessary.
The van has been completely re-built mechanically, it’s been adapted for Lead free fuel, has all the basics for self sufficiency on the road, but been kept as original as it could. The stretcher in the back had to be removed and two back seats taken out. The paintwork is believed to be original apart from a few touch ups where the paint had cracked. The blue flashing lights, have been replaced with clear lenses, though the original blue ones will be supplied for ‘show demonstrations’
The interior has been kept pretty much as it was, the dymo labelling in the front cab has been translated into English, the floor has a hardwearing wood and all the seats have been re-covered in soft Italian leather to keep it authentic.
Some comforts such as cigar lighter and a period working radio have been added. It's also wired for a Leisure battery so you can plug anything. A special made protection cover comes with it as well!
Powered by its 1438cc engine, which generally produced circa 45BHP, the ambulance variants were fitted with a higher output 51bhp engine allowing faster response times, even fully kitted out and laden with paramedics and a patient.
Fully registered in the UK with the age-appropriate number CDM 669M. The van is supplied with numerous amounts of paperwork documenting its restoration (exceeding £20k!), as well as the original owner’s handbook and some bits of paperwork from its time in Italy.
Summary
What is not to like about this, just look at the photos, it is cool, though subtle and we believe a great canvas to make your own. A rare opportunity not to be missed. For further details and to view, contact me anytime!
