Description

For Sale: 1961 Land Rover Series 2A – A British Icon

This 88 inch Land Rover Series IIA was built on the 11th September 1961. It was the 72nd Series 2a to be built, and one of only 72 remaining (taxed/ SORN) 1961 Series 2a’s in GB. Today, it proudly stands as a fine example of British motoring history, thoughtfully maintained and sympathetically upgraded. Finished in deep bronze green, this Land Rover retains its original charm while incorporating some later refinements for enhanced usability.

Vehicle Overview:
• Chassis and Bulkhead: Both original and in excellent condition, preserving the authenticity and originality of this Land Rover. Previous repairs have been carried out to a high standard, which is a testament to careful ownership.
• Engine: Powered by the reliable 2¼ litre petrol engine - rare 5MB variant and military engine. This variant of the 2. 25 litre petrol is highly durable and remarkably smooth. I have not heard another engine run this quietly – not even a Bentley or a Rolls Royce. The engine is paired with a Zenith carburettor, which is known for its straightforward, dependable operation.
• Gearbox and Clutch: Upgraded to a reconditioned unit from a later Series Land Rover, offering improved drivability thanks to the addition of synchro on 2nd gear. This makes changing gear smoother and more forgiving, particularly in stop-start conditions. Of course it’s had a new clutch fitted, and being the later gearbox (full hydraulic clutch) operation is much smoother than previous models.
• Transfer Case: The transfer case came with the reconditioned gearbox and operates faultlessly. The 4WD engage and release works correctly, as well High and Low-Range select.

Driveline and Suspension:
• Suspension: Parabolic springs and Monroe shock absorbers have been installed on all four corners, significantly enhancing both ride comfort and handling. This upgrade has made the most noticeable difference in improving the vehicle’s overall drivability and road manners.
• Differentials: New HS UJ’s. An almost unused differential that was shelved for years, has been fitted to the rear axle. New drive flanges on all corners. The driveline is very tight and has no play.
• Brakes: Upgraded to the larger 1-ton braking system, providing superior stopping power and control. These most likely require further adjustment as it pulls to the right under heavy braking.

Exterior:
• Paint: Deep bronze green. The paintwork is in very good condition, in the original cellulose paint type that would have been used in 1961.
• Hood: A new Exmoor trim canvas hood has been installed, along with new galvanised hood sticks, offering excellent protection from the elements while maintaining the vehicle’s classic style.
• Wheels and Tyres: Very recent Goodyear G90 tyres and the wheels are in good condition. In my opinion they could do with a refurbishment, to finally complete this Land Rover.

Interior:
• Paint: Attention to detail during the full stripping, prepping and repainting the interior was of paramount importance. The bulkhead was stripped to bare metal, seat box was dismantled and stripped to metal etc.
• Gauges: All gauges work apart from the AMP’s dial. This is because the system has been converted (correctly and safely) to 12V Negative Earth – like all modern systems. The speedo is remarkably accurate and stable.
• Heater: The Smiths heater is a rarity as the electric motor works very well. The heater core has a small pin-prick hole in it, so water flow is currently bypassed. This is a simple fix for a radiator specialist to braze/ solder.

The Appeal:
This Land Rover Series 2A offers the ideal combination of classic design and practical upgrades, making it highly appealing to both collectors and enthusiasts. For those seeking a vintage British icon, this vehicle delivers robust performance while retaining its period-correct charm. The sympathetic upgrades, such as the reconditioned gearbox and enhanced brakes, improve the driving experience without detracting from the vehicle’s authenticity.
The appeal of this Series 2A also lies in its versatility. Whether you’re looking for a dependable vehicle for countryside adventures, an occasional weekend drive to the pub, or an iconic piece to add to your collection, this Land Rover is up to the task. With its timeless design and solid mechanical foundation, it represents both a usable classic and a sound investment.

Additional Notes:
• This Land Rover has been cared for by enthusiasts (previous owners were registered with S2 club) and retains much of its original character.
• All work on the vehicle has been carried out with an eye toward reliability, making it an excellent candidate for regular use or as a weekend adventurer.
• Lots of history and paperwork, including the BMI Heritage Trust Certificate specifying the original supplier, build date and specification.

Serious inquiries only. Contact for further details or to arrange a viewing. I've driven this Land Rover very frequently and even on a 600-mile round trip over 3 days last year. I wouldn't hesitate to do it all over again tomorrow morning if the need arose. While it's not built for speed, this Series 2A has proven itself to be incredibly dependable and capable over long distances. The sturdy 2. 25L petrol runs smoothly, and with the upgraded suspension and gearbox, it handles both motorways and backroads with ease. It's the kind of vehicle that might not rush you to your destination, but it will get you there reliably, every time. The confidence it inspires behind the wheel, knowing that it's ready for the next journey, is a testament to its robust build and ongoing care.
When not in use, it's kept under a car cover in a secure lock-up and during my ownership, has not been left out in the British weather.
I will upload a video including a walk-around and driving, to YouTube when I get time. I'll update this listing when it's available to watch.
