1975 Alfa Romeo Spider 2000 Veloce Series 2 RHD

Being sold from my private collection of Continental and Classic cars, as I have ultimately made the decision to sell off my entire collection inventory, including my Spider Veloce.

Having always had a soft spot for roadsters, and having been fortunate enough to own virtually every incarnation of open top sports car made in the past five decades, there are a few stand out cars, at the top of that list is, the Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce.

Alfa Romeo had captured the hearts of sports car lovers with their 750 and 101 Series Giulietta Spiders in the 1950s and 1960, a lightweight roadster with an all-alloy twin overhead camshaft engine, superb mechanical specification sheet, and of course draped in Pininfarina’s finest design. A winning formula. So, when the time came to replace the Giulietta and Giulia, Alfa Romeo simply followed the exact same formula again. They even called the Spider Giulia again!
The Series 1 105 Giulia Spiders had the moniker Duetto, or Ossi Di Sepia, for its cuttle shaped rear end, these delicate cars were an instant success, and Alfa Romeo were again making glorious roadsters, ready for the new decade ahead. However, there were now strong competitors in this segment, Fiat were producing their 124 Spider, of attracting clients away from Milano.
Alfa Romeo had to up the ante, to raise their game and remain at the very top, the strategy was a redesign of the Duetto, gone was the awkward rear end styling, replaced with an aerodynamic rear Kamm tailed design.
The Series 2 had larger capacity engines, final drive ratios and a limited slip differential in the 2000 Veloce, the interior treatment was also given a restyle by Farina.
In this final incarnation of the Alfa Spider, Alfa Romeo, with very minor changes, kept the production line running until the end of 1993.

Coming to the subject car, my Spider has been a little gem, I am the second owner, previously owned by Professed Benji Glesser, a mechanical engineering lecturer at the UCT.
The Professor had used the Spider sparingly, and kept it for the occasional run with the local Cape Alfa Romeo Club, of which he was a founding member.
I was fortunate enough to have spotted the Spider at a local eatery on a quiet Sunday morning, I immediately set out to find the owner of this Spider.
After a brief conversation it was very apparent that the Prof would not be selling the car, at least not in his lifetime. Contact details were exchanged, and we went our separate ways.
The Professor had promised to keep my name in his final will and testament, as “Spider Buyer”

This said, I received a call a few years later, sadly Prof Glesser had now come to pass, I was the “Spider Buyer” as per his final will.

The love and care that the Prof had bestowed on the Spider is evident to see, it is original and unrestored, it drives wonderfully and has the most glorious soundtrack.
I cannot imagine that a restored car can ever match the feel and the effect that such an original, and preserved specimen has.

Body wise the Spider is pin straight and bone dry, being a man with some foresight, shortly after purchase the Professor had, had some additional Wax sealer applied to any area where corrosion could have manifested, this, along with careful indoor storage for its entire lifetime, have left the Spider in a rather remarkable condition.

The Bianco Spino paintwork has a beautiful lustre, my favourite colour on a Spider!
The mohair soft top and all bright work, glass, lenses, and badges are in beautiful and original condition.
Stepping inside, the interior truly is in a remarkable and fully functional state, again, the care and love bestowed on this car are evident looking inside the cabin. Mechanically the Spider is also in great nick, with many small maintenance items recently replaced;

• Major service performed.
• Tune up and reset of ignition timing.
• Carburettor tune and balance.
• Cooling system flush and refill.
• Hydraulic system bleed and flush.

Alfa Romeos have become pinnacle classics, today they are revered for their superior mechanical specifications, elegant designs, and just as a fine wine, they only become better with age.

I have been delighted with every drive in the Spider, the 2000 motor has loads of power, the full synchromesh 5 speed manual transmission is precise, and the addition of a factory fitted limited slip differential, just plants the power down so well on the tarmac.

The AROC, Alfa Romeo Owners Club in the UK hosts many prestigious events, ensuring any would be owner has the prospect of fun filled and exciting motoring, with like-minded individuals.
