Description
For sale is our 1984 Renault 5 MK1. It is a TL model with a 4 cylinder 1. 1L engine. It’s a late MK1 so has a rare Le Car 2 dealer package with coloured bumpers, pinstripe and various other extras. It has only covered 25500 miles in the whole 39 years since it was built! Unfortunately a change of circumstances forces a reluctant sale as I no longer have the time or money to look after it and it really needs to go to someone who will look after it and drive it regularly. I have , and I believe at least the previous owner did, stored it in a dry garage since we brought it. It will be tax and mot exempt next year and is a brilliant little classic that always catches people’s eye when it’s out!
I have carried out a fair amount of work on it myself since owning it, also it has been to my mechanic a few times and there are plenty of receipts from previous work, most notable of which was a bill for a £3500 general recommission in 2021. Work I have carried out includes, new brake master cylinder and fluid, rebuild one of the rear drums that had been rebuild not very long ago but the brake line had fouled and contaminated the shoes, replaced air filter, removed rear bumper and fixed the cracked mounting hole, sanded back and repainted the bumper brackets and replaced all the hardware, replaced a dechromed headlight unit, replaced both headlight bulbs, replaced the plastic under the steering wheel as it was cracked. There has been lots of other small jobs to try and improve the overall condition of the car. I have done endless amounts of sanding back and repainting components and replaced all old tired hardware I have come across. When we purchased the car I also cleaned out all the wheel arches and waxoiled them. I removed the near side front wing and found that the inner wing had a considerable amount of corrosion where there is a gap that water pools in, a common issue with these I believe. My mechanic professionally cleaned and welded the inner wing back up and I have the receipt for this extensive work and photos. I have since sourced a new wing in green as the existing one had rusted through as well, which will need painting.
It has a full mot which took a fair bit of fettling to pass with the wheel cylinder issue but there were no major issues, feel free to check on the gov website. I replaced the front sidelight lenses as part of this work as they were cracked and installed new hardware. The car is in really nice condition and is mechanically solid, owed to the low miles and extensive work it has had done. The main thing that lets it down is cosmetics. The paint on roof and bonnet are poor, likely from bad storage and would need attention but it isn’t rusted, just faded and thin. I believe that with a bit of bodywork this car would be near perfect. The interior is lovely and I have replaced various trims to get it back up to standard. I have a good amount of spares to go with the car including a full front ball joint kit and tie rod ends, a rear exhaust section, multiple bulbs, an old set of headlight units and lenses and a full servo set up that would really improve the brakes on the car. I have sanded and painted the mount ing brackets which I am informed are rare for this era as they have rusted away on lots of cars with servos. It would just require a bit of work to install it but would definitely help the braking performance feel more modern.
It has a few modern touches such as AVO shocks that have been replaced within the last 5 years and have seen less than 1000 miles, and Dunlop streetwise over width tyres that equally good condition and make the ride far better. Unfortunately due to change in circumstances it just isn’t practical to keep and although it has been periodically started and driven to avoid any associated problems, it just isn’t being driven and needs to find a forever home where it can be smartened up and cared for. If you have any questions or require more photos do not hesitate to ask. Located in East Sussex and viewing is welcome. Ideally looking for offers in the region of £5000
