Description
Capots Vintage, a specialist in prestige and classic vehicles in Lyon, is offering for sale a Facel Vega HK500 from 1959. A symbol of French automotive elegance, but unfortunately short-lived, the Facel Vega HK500 was presented at the Paris Motor Show in October 1958 and designed under the supervision of Jean Daninos, the brand's founder. It perfectly embodies the refinement and performance of its era. Its name reflects its remarkable power-to-weight ratio of 5 kilograms per horsepower, delivered by a 5. 9-litre Chrysler V8 engine developing 360 bhp. The result was an impressive performance, with a top speed in excess of 230 km/ h, while offering exceptional comfort. The first Facel Vega to be fitted with Dunlop disc brakes on all four wheels, this model was a harmonious blend of power, technology and luxury, and remains one of the fastest four-seater coupés of its time. The example we are presenting is a European version, delivered new in 1959 and purchased by its last owner in April 1985. It has therefore been in the owner's possession for over 39 years. It comes in a chalky colour with a burgundy leather interior and is fitted with the mechanical gearbox. The bodywork was restored in 2019 and today retains all its splendour and excellent condition. The very spacious interior is original, with a superb patina and comfortable upholstery. The dashboard stands out for its hand-painted wood effect over a thin layer of metal, a symbol of the craftsmanship typical of Facel Vega. In 2007, a major overhaul was carried out on the gearbox, as well as on the axle and front axle, including replacement of the bearings and seals and refurbishment of the wishbones, among other things. In 2009, the engine was overhauled, with work including resurfacing of the engine block and cylinder head, replacement of the seats and guides, and rebuilding of the crankshaft. More recently, a major service was carried out in July 2023, including removal and re-installation of the gearbox, replacement of the clutch release bearing, gearbox output SPI seals and engine cases, and overhaul of the carburettors with ultrasonic treatment. In addition, adjustments were made to the ignition to facilitate starting. Finally, the last service in January 2024 included the replacement of the brake callipers, the fitting of an electric fuel pump, and the repair and reinstallation of various elements of the electrical system, among others. The total cost of these two jobs was €26, 000, with invoices to prove it. With the records we have, there have only been two owners since 1966. For more information and photos, visit our website.
