Description
We were fortunate to acquire this TD 21 Series II in 2018 from the estate of John Kenny, who bought the Alvis in 1965 through W. B. Crawford in Ireland. It had been part exchanged for an Aston Martin DB 5 by the original owner, clothing manufacturer and amateur racing driver, Jack Toohey who kept the Alvis for its first two years.
SZD 422 is one of just 59 original Series II drophead coupes produced, of which only 23 had the (fabulous) ZF 5 speed gearbox. It has, therefore, the aluminium doors, four wheel disc brakes and recessed spot lamps.
I am grateful to Kevin H for pointing out (via this advertisement) the early history and also that it is one of 12 TD 21s sold new in Ireland (6 dropheads and 6 coupes).
Mechanically, SZD 422 had clearly been cared for throughout its life, and is as good a driving TD 21 as you would wish to find, following a thorough and professional overhaul over 350 hours. It runs cool, correct oil pressure, and is an absolute delight.
The front seats have been beautifully refurbished with correct Connolly hides, and a new Everflex roof fitted. Various other matters have included a set of 5 new Avons, alternator (upgraded by previous owner), electric fan (unused!) and an electric fuel pump to get the fuel to the engine quicker when starting after a period of storage.
It's absolutely on the button and has wanted for nothing during our ownership, with recent invoices on hand for £30, 000+.
The previous owner maintained the car throughout and, cosmetically, the Alvis is patinated. Some will see it as exuding a gentle charm, as we do, others might consider it not shiny enough and in need of bringing up to scratch over time. The mileage is consistent with the mechanical condition.
We have enjoyed ownership greatly and now ready for her next custodian. Sold new through Huet Motors, Dublin to Jack Toohey, it was part exchanged at W. B. Crawford for an Aston Martin DB5 in 1965, and sold to a young aviator, John Kenny. He was said to have wanted the Alvis in order to take his mother on holiday to the South of France. It was certainly a striking choice for a young man at that time, supplied new in 1963 in Alice Blue. He went on to own and use the Alvis until he passed away, having become a serial Alvis owner.
