This “B5” A4 is one of the last of the original iconic model which Volkswagen declared as “the company-wide build quality benchmark for all its other models”. Being a late production model it benefits from being ULEZ compliant. It is in solid, usable condition and still looks stylish. Unlike many older estate cars it has lived a relatively easy life with very low mileage for its age.
The car is largely rust free – spending most of its life in London it’s been spared from excessive road salt – and being mostly galvanised it’s incredibly solid for its age. The car runs very well and is enjoyable to drive – it eats miles for fun, is effortless on a run, and makes a lovely noise (although it's very quiet!) For a V6 it's not bad on fuel really, 30MPG on a run and 25 in town.
It’s now 23 years old so would benefit from minor TLC and tidying. I took it on with a couple of minor issues (which I sorted). I was going to keep it forever and began lavishing TLC on it but I’ve since replaced it with something slightly more practical which suits my needs better. I've enjoyed it and will be sad to see it go but it doesn't really make sense having two estate cars in the family.
It comes with the original book pack and partial service history – later in its life it was serviced regularly by an excellent local garage, but paperwork wasn’t always issued.
Jobs done in my ownership:
- Very recent service (wiper blades, spark plugs, air and pollen filters, engine oil & filter etc.)
- Repairs: ABS module, CV joint, rocker cover gaskets, catalytic converters etc.
- Fitted bluetooth adapter - works brilliantly.
My Dad had the alternator replaced as well as water pump under 2 years (and not many miles) ago. He said they did the cambelt when the water pump was done but there's no bill for it.
As with any car of this age expect a few small niggles and cosmetic issues but nothing that will stop you getting to your destination. Worth mentioning is the largeish crack in the windscreen, but being on the n/ s this is not affecting drivers view so hasn’t affected previous MOTs. Also be aware that there is an engine light illuminated – I think this is for an 02 sensor – it doesn’t affect the running of the car and due to age is not an MOT issue.
MOT valid to 27th November – I’ve got no worries about the next one.
Note that the number plate (valued online at £500) comes with the car, but the bike racks pictured do not. This lovely car has been in the family from new and has covered just over 88, 000 miles. My Dad’s partner originally ordered it as a company car. Having previously owned a Golf GTI she went for the unusual spec here - Sport option ticked (slightly lowered suspension etc), cloth interior and the lovely V6 motor with manual box. It's been well loved, maintained, and never abused. Being a London car the mileage is low, and with smaller runabout cars in the family this car was mainly used for longer trips.
