Description
Renault as a pioneer of turbo engines in F1 in the 70s, brought this technology to their Group B rally cars with the early 80s Group B Renault 5 Turbo/ Turbo 2. After Group B was banned, Renault applied the same recipe to the Renault Super 5 series designed by Marcelo Gandini of legends like Lamborghini Miura, Countach, Lancia Stratos, Ferrari GT4. The 1. 4 GT Turbo was launched in 1985 GT Turbo phase 1 featured the dated but robust 1. 4 Cléon-Fonte engine with OHV, a pressurised Solex carb and an air-air intercooler pushing out 115HP; revised and facelifted in 1987 with more power and reliability it featured the water-cooled turbo pushing 120HP in std spec.
The 5 GT Turbo ph2 was a major rallying success for Renault winning 2 X Group N World Rally Championships (1989, 1990) in the hands of Alain Oreille and an outright WRC victory in 1989 Cote d’Ivoire rally against much more powerful 4WD cars with Group N car (N= normal, the car spec being very close to std road spec).
Here we have a phase 2 example that has lived all its life in Greece, now located in a suburb of Athens. It is in amazing condition having spent all its life in the dry Greek climate, garaged and never seen any salty roads - No rust whatsoever. It does not look or feel like a 34 year old car!
Mechanically, visually and ALL electrics are in mint condition in largely OEM spec as evidenced also by an FIA Historic Regularity Certificate issued in November 2021. It has been maintained with no expense spared, with an annual fully synthetic oil change and OEM filter regardless of miles and anything else the car may need with no expense spared.
The car was last serviced in March 2024 which included fully synthetic oil, windscreen wiper motor, A-pillar cover, rear wiper cover, windscreen wash pump, electrical windows adjustments and lubrication, adjustment of the passenger window switch, gear lever adjustment, cold start idle adjustment, driver seat rubbers, passenger light switch.
There are a few tasteful modifications (see spec below), most notably EFI conversion for power and reliability as well as better handling. A significant spares package is available at an additional cost (see below) which includes most ultra rare parts needed to return the car to OEM spec.
There is a well functioning alarm which also controls the central locking.

I am the fourth owner of the car having purchased it in 2021 from a friend with intent to keep however the reality is I rarely enjoy this car once/ twice a year as I am now based permanently in the UK,
The car was fully stripped and resprayed to its original color in 2004 and is still in stunning condition.
The engine is the original 1. 4 C1J which was rebuilt on 11/ 2010 - 198. 000Km and uprated for more power and reliability. It got new OEM pistons and liners and converted to fuel injection (EFI) for reliability. This means none of the issues you find with carbs, chokes not working/ hard to cold start, hot start issues, fuel starvation etc. This car always starts on the button like a modern car, whether hot or cold. Other upgrades include a stronger water-cooled intercooler so none of the detonation you see on modified carb cars. Larger turbo and 63mm stainless steel custom made exhaust which makes it sound great but not too loud.
The gearbox was fully rebuilt at 160K with new forks, new uprated clutch kit and with a limited slip differential. Brakes are upgraded 285mm discs (OEM is 238mm) on OEM callipers.
All parts were bought new and are in excellent condition with very little mileage.
The car now sits on mint OZ Superleggera 15” rims with 195/ 50/ 15 tires. The original OEM 13” wheels are included in the spares package not included in the price (see spares list below).
The interior is in excellent condition, reupholstered with OEM cloth and new bolsters and fully OEM except for a tastefully placed boost gauge. Windows open at the intended speed, not the usual tired, slow window most R5 GTs of this age have.
Full photographic record of the mechanical restoration is available to hand over to new owner.
