Description
For sale is my 1991 Mercedes W124 300CE-24V Coupe, finished in Nautical Blue Metallic with a Cream Beige Leather interior along with the Walnut wood trims (the best colour combo in my biased opinion).
I have owned this car now for 18 months, shamefully only covering under 300 miles - hence why I am selling. I had always lusted for a W124 coupe and this one being the 300CE-24V was the very best you could get back in 1991, and is a very rare car today. It packs the 3. 0 24v straight six M104 engine producing 220hp, making it brisk even by today’s standards. Being a 1991 model year also means that this car doesn’t suffer from the biodegradable loom and water based paint issues that harm later models.
The car has covered just 116k miles, being fairly low for one of these. It has had 6 former keepers with one long term owner for 18 years between 1996 - 2015, and the subsequent owner then kept the car for 8 years. It comes with all necessary keys, the original spare wheel, toolkit and all manuals. There is a decent amount of paperwork with MOT certificates dating back to 1995. The car has 10 months MOT until 06/ 25 (only 2 advisories noted) and is HPI clear.
Perhaps the most impressive point to note about this car is the fact that it has never failed an MOT in its 33 year lifespan! This is including all pre 2006 records which aren’t shown online. Last year, I put the car through its first MOT in 5 years to which it passed first time, no advisories after only fitting a set of tyres to replace the old perished Michelins.
Specification
Being a mid facelift ‘91 year car means that it has the better looking pre facelift headlights and the famous ‘Sacco’ exterior panels (named after designer Bruno Sacco) that the very early models didn’t have.
Back in 1991 this car would’ve cost over £40k brand new! It is still very well equipped even by todays standards, featuring:
• Electrically Adjustable Front Seats
• Electric Sunroof
• Remote Central Locking
• Cruise Control
• Air Conditioning
• Headlight Washers
The car has also been fitted with a retro style Continental head unit which means that this 33 year old Merc has Bluetooth connectivity!
The car has also been tastefully lowered around 40mm whilst still retaining the usual levels of comfort.
Maintenance
Mechanically, the car has been very well looked after throughout the years. The MOT history speaks for itself. Recent work includes:
• Oil Service using Shell Helix 10w/ 40
• New Sachs Steering Damper
• New Exide Battery
• Replacement Starter Motor
• Replacement Battery Tray
In previous years it has had:
• New Beru Leads
• New Bosch Distributor Cap
• New NGK Spark Plugs
• New Nissens Radiator
• New OEM Thermostat
The car also comes with a bundle of spares, including filters, ARB bushes, engine mount and fixings, etc.
The car drives outstandingly well and shifts smoothly through all gears. With the windows down and the sunroof popped up to reveal the airy, pillar-less cabin, it is a wonderful place to enjoy a summer cruise.
Condition
Overall I would say that the car presents itself well. Having spent all its life in London before me means that the underside is remarkably clean considering it is still in its original, unrestored condition (I have pictures of the underside and common rust points to prove).
The bodywork although damage free, would need attention in some areas to return it to its former glory. Most notably, the passenger front wing would need a repair due to corrosion (very common on W124’s) and there is some faded paint around the drivers door and passenger rear quarter. For an unrestored 33 year old car though it is in good order and the rear arches are completely corrosion free.
The interior is in outstanding order with none of the usual cracked leather. This was actually one of the main reasons as to why I bought this car as it is in exceptional order compared to other W124’s I viewed.
A walk around video will be available upon request to get a better idea of the condition of the car.
Being 33 years old unfortunately means the car doesn’t come without its downsides. Firstly, the water pump has started to produce a slight whine, the seatbelt butlers and A/ C does not work, and the car was advised on an engine oil leak and rear brake pads on the most recent MOT.
It will be very sad to see it go as it is a car that I have wanted for quite some time, in my dream spec. I can only see values of W124’s going one way thanks to their legendary status and outstanding build quality.
