After 8 years of ownership, I have my daily driver, a 1996 Volkswagen Golf up for sale.
I bought it 2017 when it had 50k miles on the clock. It's now showing just shy of 89k miles. If you're looking for something a little bit different, nostalgic but also reliable for daily use, and so easy to work on - a MK3 Golf is worth a look. Last of the old world Volkswagens. Unmodified.
Spec:
- 1. 8litre, 90bhp 4 cylinder ADZ engine. (It's a mk2 GTi engine but with single port injection) - 35-40mpg
- GL spec with 4x electric windows, mirrors and sunroof
- Series 2 car with body coloured bumpers, later headlights, driving lights and fogs
- Comes with OEM roof racks, Mk4 golf radio/ CD, summer and winter overmats.
- Central locking
- Full service history - stamped with invoices.
Major works in my ownership:
- New Clutch + cable (54k)
- Timing belt + water pump + radiator (54k)
- New Exhaust/ Catalyst + Muffler + radiator (64k)
- New Starter motor
In 2023 the car was off the road as I bought a small diesel to replace it (cheaper tax and better mpg). This summer it has had some recommissioning to get it ready for sale:
- New Radiator + hose ends + coolant flush
- New Plugs, leads, distributor cap and rotor
- New Rear wheel bearing
- New Gearshift linkages + bushings
- New front springs, dampers and top mounts
- Outer sills repaired - (Sill covers will come with car)
- New Catalyst and O2 sensor
- New Throttle body gasket
- New Front tyres
- New battery
- Fluids and filters service
Car idles smoothly and pulls well through all gears. Effortlessly keeps up with 70mph traffic on the motorway and is a quite engaging thing to pilot.
With the sale comes a large pack of receipts, and MOT's. It has up to date service books, 2 keys and 11 months MOT. Car is back in weekly service.
Future work required.
- MK3s rust, so alongside the sill repairs, the bottom of the front and rear wings and drivers door have been dressed by the body shop to mitigate scabbing.
- Brake lines are showing their age and will need renewing at some point (MOT advisory)
