1930 Norton 500cc Special V5 present.
This bike was built as a promotion bike for Oily Rag Clothing Co.
A 1930 Norton special taking the best bits from various Norton Models (16, 18, 20) This bike originally left the Norton factory and was shipped to Denmark in 1931. Bought by myself from Belgium in 2014 as a box of bits. I spent the last decade finding all the rare parts needed to put together this very special machine.
Starting from the front and going back here is her story
Front wheel. Alloy rim, stainless spokes with new tyre done by central wheel components Birmingham. Classic Kawasaki A7 twin leading shoe hub with new shoes. Stainless wheel spindle.
Girder forks. Stripped with all spindles and bushes checked, greased and put back together. Attached is a custom printed tax disc.
Frame. Model 16 rigid.
Vintage headlight (not connected, was going to put rechargeable batteries in). Custom light mount bracket made from original supports.
Handle bars. Custom made 1” stainless steel bars, Biltwell grips, Amal alloy throttle, Quality inverted levers with cables running through the bars.
On/ off. Custom on/ off ignition.
Petrol tank. Model 18 petrol tank raised an inch to show off the rockers chattering away while running. New filler cap. Race tank pads. Vintage fuel tap with sight glass. The fuel tap does have a slight leak that needs attention.
Engine. Model 18 engine with new main bearings, new big end bearing, flywheel rebalanced by Alpha, Barrel rebored with new piston/ rings, Model 20 twin port head (as rare as hens teeth) valve seats re-cut, new valves, springs and cups.
Exhausts. Custom made stainless steel twin pipes. Custom made exhaust nuts.
Primary drive and clutch. Bob Newby Racing belt drive and clutch set up.
Ignition. Electronic magneto (PM1R) by BTH components.
Carb. Brand new Amal 276.
Seat. Custom leather stamped seat, Polished stainless steel Biltwell hinge, nickel plated rear seat springs.
Foot pegs. SRM forged stainless pegs hangers, Norton brand foot pegs.
Gearbox. Dolls head box. I bought this box as a reconditioned unit but have not had it apart to check, custom hand shift changer and knob.
Choke. Brass choke lever mounted under seat.
Center stand. Cast stand.
Number plate / Toolbox. Custom made toolbox unit with custom leather stamped cover. This unit also holds the custom number plate..
Mudguard. Lowbrow custom heavy duty ribbed rear mudguard with custom stainless steel supports. Rear light is LED with batteries but not currently working.
Rear wheel. Old rim with new stainless spokes by Central wheel components. New tyre. New shoes. With a stainless brake adjuster with brass wing nut. Stainless wheel spindle.
200 plus build hours have gone into this bike.
The bike runs, she is just missing the oil adjuster that screws into the engine next to the timing chain case before she was due to have her road test and shake down. Racing Vincent can make these but has to wait until they need enough order to make a batch.
