Description
Marcos 3L, manufactured in 1969, with Ford Essex V6 (2994cc) and four speed gearbox (plus overdrive). Featuring a black leather interior with Webasto sunroof and electric windows.
The car was purchased from Redline Sportscars in 2009 by my uncle, who then exported it to Denmark – where it lived until November 2021 when it was re-imported to the UK and came into my ownership. During its time in Denmark it was maintained by a Marcos enthusiast who also owned several Marcos, and since its return to the UK it has been stored in a heated and insulated warehouse.
Odometer reading in 2009 was 31, 938 miles, the current reading is 41, 960 so in the last 15 years it has done 10, 000 miles.
In May 2009 the car was featured in an edition of Classics Monthly, with professional photos and a full 6 page spread in the magazine. (Buyers guide p. 106). We have a copy of the edition which will come with the car.
Webasto roof is in good condition, there are no holes, and it seals around the edges – there is no water ingress. The mechanism latch works very well, although the runners down the sides are a bit stiff so requires some strength to open/ close from a seated position.
Leather interior. The condition of the interior is on the whole pretty good, the leather is generally unmarked although there is considerable wear in one patch in particular on the RHD of the driver’s seat - this is from getting in and out. There is also naturally some wear around the gear stick. Otherwise it’s in good condition.
Electrics. Both windows open and close well on the electric switches. Wipers, lights and horn all work fine. It’s fitted with what I think is an original radio, which does work but features only LW and MW! The aerial does not retract fully and will need fixing. Fitting a modern radio which doesn’t require the long aerial would perhaps be the solution! The speakers work ok.
Engine. The car is in good driveable condition and runs very well. The battery holds its charge, and the oil pressure and temperature are fine. We recently replaced both rear wheel cylinders with parts from Marcos heritage. It’s had runs out of a few hours recently and performs perfectly well. The overdrive works very well.
Chassis. The chassis is very solid - see photos (videos available on request). The car has been used incredibly lightly over the last 6 years and has been stored in a heated warehouse. Galvanised at some point between 15-25 years ago.
The area behind the bottom rail is solid and under seatbelt anchorage is good. The floor under the carpet is also solid.
Bodywork. The condition of the paintwork is mixed, there are some small areas where the paint has blistered so it would benefit from some attention at some point. There is a 2cm chip on the nose and also an area under the windscreen which has peeled. This would suit someone looking for a driveable car to enjoy immediately with a view to tidying the paint in the future. The front bumpers I removed because I prefer the look without, they are stored in the boot, along with the spare wheel/ tow rope etc. The car comes with an indoor car cover.
Wheels and tyres. Wheels are original and have a degree of corrosion, see photos. Tyres are Goodyear Rally Special – plenty of tread.
A lovely original example, ready to be driven and enjoyed!
