A total of 8, 844 examples were produced in the TB version. The 348 designation refers to the 3. 4-litre engine and the eight cylinders. The "T" refers to the transverse gearbox mounted behind the engine. It was the first completely new model launched by Ferrari after the death of Enzo Ferrari in August 1988. The 348 presented at the 1989 Frankfurt Motor Show replaced the Ferrari 328 in the range as a 2-seater saloon with a V8 engine. The bodywork was traditionally designed by Pininfarina. The 348, also known as the "little Ferrari Testarossa", inherited its big sister's side grilles, rear light grilles and sharp lines. Mechanically, the major change was the longitudinal layout of the engine, as in the 288GTO and F40 before it. The engine of the 348 was designed by engineer Nicola Materazzi, the father of the Ferrari 288 GTO and Ferrari F40. Over the four years of production, these TB/ TS models benefited from numerous improvements. These included changes to the design of the seats, the transfer of the battery from the rear to the front (to change the weight distribution), an overhaul of the suspension (springs, dampers, splines) and modifications to the engine (Motronic 2. 5 then 2. 7 from 91).
