Mercedes SL’s values are already starting to climb, as those of us who wanted one when they were new can now own one of these appreciating 2+2 convertibles. As with all modern classics, the advice from forums and magasines is to buy the best you can afford.
We specialise in finding rare and desirable cars, the type we all wanted in our youth. Just like our rare Designo SL320.
The R129 SL roadster was produced between 1989 and 2001, replacing the R107. It was then be replaced by the ever more complex and costly R230’s. Our rare Designo example is a face lift car and was registered in 2000, it is laden with expensive Designo options.
W57 LNP has only covered 47, 320 miles, that’s just over 2, 000 miles a year, backed up by comprehensive service and MOT history. It was acquired from SL specialist (the SL Shop) by its most recent enthusiast owner, back in 2017. It was christened “Des” (for Designo) by its enthusiast owner, and has been used sparingly, garaged and cherished by them.
It’s a late model, face lift R129 and was registered on 1/ 3/ 2000, and is only £325 per annum road tax. The face lift SL320 is powered by the silky smooth M112 3. 2 litre V6, developing 224bhp, enough to propel the roadster on to 149mph, and waft to 60mph in 7. 7 seconds.
In our view, our modern classic roadster is beautifully presented inside and out, and benefits from super rare factory Designo upgrades, including beautiful Designo Ocean (Sea 026) Blue Metallic (very metallic petrol blue), Designo black and ultramarine blue full Nappa leather interior (including door cards and rear seats) and genuine carbon fibre Designo door trims and centre console, with matching ocean blue woven into the weave (we have never seen another). These rare Designo options would have added a small fortune to the already hefty price of the SL when new.
The R129 roadsters were loaded with standard equipment (even by modern day standards), and ours was specified from new with a number of factory upgrades in addition to the Desingo features above. Its spec is exhaustive, but here’s some of the highlights: power hood, electronic steering wheel adjustment, cruise control, power fold door mirrors, climate control, rear parking sensors, heated front seats, electric memory front seats, head lamp washers, multiple air bags and electronic stability program, pop up roll bar, wind deflector. This list goes on and on.
Our Designo SL is beautifully original, and presented in stunning condition. Ready for its lucky new owner, we have just had the 3 rear windows professionally replaced, the hood water proofed, a “B” service at a Mercedes specialist, new battery, 4 new correct Mercedes fitment Continental ContiSportContact tyres fitted, and it professionally detailed.

Its MOT history is excellent, and backs up its low mileage as genuine. Its most recent test was passed with no advisories, and expires on 26/ 6/ 25.
