Description
The car, with a sports chassis and five-speed automatic gearbox, was bought at a C&C auction in 2023, has had five owners, and only partial service history. It has since been fully serviced by John Haynes, a reputable Mercedes independent. It has four brand new tyres, a long MoT, a new AC condenser and dryer, and the dreaded wiring harness has been replaced with a non-biodegradable version made by a well-known UK supplier.
Everything works. This beautiful Mercedes E320 C124 (W124 Coupe) with its sunroof, pillarless sides and all windows open brings you the sensation of open-top motoring – or if you prefer, when fully buttoned up, you can cruise in style, comfort and calm. Cossetted in plush leather seats behind the Mercedes star in front, you can drive all day in air-conditioned comfort and safety, and step out at the end of your journey, fresh as a daisy.
It's a great place to be, as I discovered on a four-day trip to France, driving on those empty country roads as well as on the autoroute.
Born in 1995, as you’d expect from a Mercedes of the granite-solid era, it’s in great condition – despite a few light blemishes, you would guess from the condition of the blue-black paintwork that it was at least 10 years younger. Everything works, and the creamy, top-of-the-range, 24-valve, electronically fuel-injected, 3. 2-litre straight-six engine delivers a hefty chunk of power through the five-speed box when requested. And with brand new tyres and under 99k miles under its boots, it’s got many years left in it yet.
Bit of history: the previous owner kept it in a humidity-controlled environment but didn’t drive it much. So as its fifth owner, I have recommissioned it, replacing key components including the aircon condenser and dryer, tyres, brake hoses, some interior components, oil level sensor, and most importantly, the upper engine wiring harness, which was suffering from the problem that afflicted all Mercedes cars of this era, namely biodegradable wiring insulation. Now it’s all in full working order and has been 100% reliable.
The interior matches the mechanicals: again, everything works and the plush leather seats look almost new. It has original Mercedes-Benz carpets with spotless wooden trim and those wonderfully clear instruments.
While its documentation is not complete, the car has been fully checked and serviced by John Haynes, a well-known, highly reputable Mercedes specialist and has a long MoT with no advisories. It includes an owner’s handbook and toolset.
Sadly, I need to sell it so this car is ready for its next owner: is that you?
