Description

The Triumph 1800 was produced from 1946 to 1949, with the commission number (chassis number) beginning with TD; 3999 vehicles were produced. The Triumph 1800 Town and Country Saloon has a 4-cylinder 1776 cc engine similar to that used in the Jaguar 1. 5-litre saloon. The transmission is a four-speed column-shift gearbox with the gear lever to the right of the steering wheel. The chassis consists of a tubular frame with a transverse leaf spring for the front suspension. The front and rear bumpers had a V-shaped cross-section. The bodies of our vehicles were all built by Mulliners in Bordesley Green, Birmingham, and then mounted on the chassis, which was manufactured by Standard Triumph in Coventry. This company shared its name with other Mulliner coachbuilders (e. g. H. J. Mulliner and Arthur Mulliner) but had no financial connection with them. Black's intention was not to build a state-of-the-art high-performance car, but rather a touring car for gentlemen who liked to drive to the country club in something out of the ordinary. For reasons of profitability, the mechanical parts were to be supplied by Standard. The engine was a 1776cc in-line four-cylinder derived from the side-valve engine that had powered the pre-war Standard 12 and 14 models. Standard had developed an overhead-valve version of the engine which was sold to Lyons, and this engine was specified for the Roadster and Town and Country. With a single Solex carburettor, it produced 65 bhp at 4, 500 rpm. The four-speed gearbox with synchronisation in second, third and fourth gear was also carried over from the pre-war vehicle. Engine: OHV four-cylinder with cast iron block and head, 1, 776 cc Power: 63 at 4, 500 rpm Torque: 93 lbs ft at 2, 000 rpm Fuel system: Single Solex downdraft carburettor Transmission: Four-speed manual gearbox: 16 seconds Top speed: 82 MPH 132Km/ HThe 1948 Triumph Town & Country Saloon is not to be confused with the Triumph Renown. After the Triumph Motor Company, founded in 1884, went bankrupt and was dissolved in 1939, Standard took over the naming rights in 1944. In 1945, the Triumph Motor Company (1945) Ltd. was re-established as a subsidiary of Standard. In 1946, Standard resumed production of Triumph automobiles, but without building on the pre-war models. The first new model was the sporty Triumph Roadster, which was joined in the same year by the four-door mid-range saloon 1800 Town & Country. The idea for this car came from John Black, the leading manager of Triumph's parent company Standard. He planned to establish Triumph as a high-quality brand that would open up the North American export market for the Standard Group. In order to suggest a particular high quality, the 1800 Town & Country took up the design of British upper-class models from the pre-war period. The 1948 model was made of aluminium and only 1360 units were built. Only a handful of vehicles still exist. Due to the high demand for steel as a result of the Second World War, this material was hardly available. For this reason, aluminium was used to build the Town & Country in 1948. Just one year later, aluminium was no longer available due to the boom in aviation. This makes the Town & Country Saloon model a very rare vehicle. The 1800 Town & Country was further developed into the Triumph Renown for the British market in 1949. The vehicle for sale was imported by the Spanish state in 1948 and used for the Franco regime and presumably for its services. This car was ordered and produced for the Franco regime in Spain. He used this car for his diplomatic duties.

We bought this car in 2021 at an auction for classic car collectors. The car was fully restored in 2016. The car is in immaculate condition. No rust because of the aluminium body and in original condition. The car is inspected and registered by the very picky and strict Swiss government.
