Description
3. 4 Mark1 SE built 21st April 1959.
Increasingly sought after pre-cursor to the now much more commonly found Mark2. Very few on the market.
Disc brakes and BRG painted wire wheels. Has Mark2 rear axle and "Coombs" wheel arches (made and fitted by JD Classics in 1994).
Matching numbers with Heritage Certificate.
Mine since July 2003. Bought from a fellow Jaguar enthusiast who was trading to a Mark2.
Condition on purchase was "honest" but well used and displaying its age and 80000 or so miles.
Has been the subject of continuous improvement bodily and mechanically to the point where it is a really fine example of the marque.
Body has had thorough rebuild where necessary, mainly floor, sills, wheel arches, crows feet, jacking points. All panel shuts are straight and tight.
Bumpers have been re-chromed. Other chrome is original and complete.
Interior shows its patina as entirely original. Limited repair would improve the driver's seat. Recent Aldridge (the best) front footwell carpets and a boot mat are in place.
All the wood is in excellent order.
Engine and gearbox were totally rebuilt in 2010 by Ken Bell, John Coombs engineer, to fast road and road-rally specification at then mileage of 86304.
Lightened flywheel. BMW metal crankshaft seal to gearbox. Spax adjustable dampers. Front suspension poly-bushed. Stainless steel "Coombs" exhaust with the improved Mark2 manifolds.
New radiator and has a Kenlowe additional electric fan
Aldon Electronic ignition.
Heater matrix rebuilt. It now generates discernible heat.
Gearbox (Moss) and overdrive overhauled by Hardy Engineering, with uprated quick overdrive fitted.
For rallying the car has a Brantz Tripmeter, compass, extra cigar lighter power points, Cibié spotlights (original style Lucas 5. 25 inch spotlights can be included), uprated headlights, additional reversing light and an alternator to feed the power.
Wiring has been improved with extra fuses and relays.
Just been fitted with Zeus four-pot calipers to the front brakes, with new servo and master cylinder as a precaution.
Has three point Willans competition seatbelts for rallying. Original lap and diagonal front belts still fitted as well.
Reduced diameter MotoLita steering wheel in place, with the original bakelite available.
Original jack, Thor spinner mallet. This is a wonderful long distance touring and rally car.
Quick, hugs the road, effortless performance with all the renowned XK torque.
I have rallied and toured it over a large part of Europe and it has not failed to finish.
It is also a Mark1. Rare and a good few think it looks better than a Mark2 (but I am prejudiced).
There are, I think, not many better ones around than this one.
I am selling because age is reducing my competition days and I am not using it enough.
It has to be on the road giving pleasure.
And it comes with a complete Jaguar toolbox in the spare wheel well, a thick file of information and invoices, Owner's Handbook and a can of Valvoline VR7 racing oil (the best).
