Volkswagen ended production of the Golf Mk I model in South Africa in 2009 and produced a limited edition of 1, 000 Citi Mk1's (based on the Golf I) was made as a commemorative series.
The Golf I was introduced in South Africa in 1978. In 1984 the Citi Golf model, based on the Golf Mk I, went into production at VW's assembly plant in Uitenhage South Africa, lasting over the last 25 years and over 370000 Citi Golf's produced.
The limited edition Citi Mk1 fitted with a 1. 6 liter petrol/ gasoline engine. Engine specs: 1595cc fuel injection, 8v SOHC, producing 74kW/ 100HP @ 5400rpm, 140Nm @ 4400rpm and acceleration from 0 to 100km/ H in only 8. 6 seconds.
The car came in only two colors, black and shadow blue metallic. Each car has its series number on the dashboard and on the Mk1 logo on the exterior. These cars feature, the later Skoda sourced dashboard, modern Golf steering wheel with airbag, leather cloth seats, front loading CD/ MP3 player, black hood lining, race style silver pedals, 15 inch alloy wheel with low profile tyres, silver foil rocker panel stripes, darkened tail lamps, chrome accents on the ‘double headlight’ grille, front chin spoiler and a stainless steel exhaust with polished twin tips.
