Description
This 1926 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost with chassis number S360RL is one of the last Silver Ghosts, which was produced in Springfield (US). The Tilbury Sedan body with body number 1525 was produced in 1924 (!) by Willoughby on behalf of the Rolls Royce Custom Coach Work.
This Tilbury Sedan, one of the 138 produced for the American Silver Ghost chassis, was used for two years as a demonstrator at the Rolls Royce Dealership in Portland, Oregon, before delivery on 23 april 1928 to the first owner, Adolph W. Gilbert of San Marino, California. Subsequent owners are Mr. Kachelhoffer, Mr. Stewart, Mr. Schultz and Mr. Loecy.
During Mr. Loecy's ownership form 1989 to 2004 the car was completely restored and given its striking color combination, which can be found in the Rolls Royce catalog from the 1920s.
Because this Silver Ghost is a 'late' Springfield, it is left-hand drive and has only 4 gears (3 forward). Despite the generous interior dimensions of the passenger section of the body, it was more an owner driver car. The 'sporty' body is fully equipped, such as an illuminated passengers compartment, rotating windows and an extensive dashboard. The Springfield was also technically somewhat different from its British examples of that time. For example it does not have a magnet but two distributors with an ignition coil. It also has a kind of central lubrication through a distribution point under the bonnet. Although people often think disparagingly about the Springfield products, they are superior in terms of materials to their Britsh contemporaries.
S360RL is in a very beautiful condition and, after an extensive technical service, is a car that starts immediately and can maintain speeds of 60 MPH for a long time without problems. To keep up with modern traffic minor adjustments have been made, such as turn signals, a windshield wiper and separate rear lights.
Big Orange, as we call her, has an impressive appearance and always makes a special entrance wherever we go. This original closed car offers many advantages in our changing climate, dry and protected from too much sun!
