The time has come to sell my Daimler Double Six to make way for a Range Rover Classic I have managed to buy back after selling 10 years ago much to my regret. Its one of the last, a 1992 in the (I believe Unique) original colour of Kingfisher Blue. 82, 700 miles and MOT’d on 4th July with no advisories.
Purchased by me in Jan 2021 as a hobby and because to me it is one of the prettiest cars made. I set about a 2 year restoration I have the photos and all the invoices (totalling approximately £4, 500 in parts alone. The work (or rather pleasure for me) has included:
Bodywork: Glass out respray attending to the common areas of corrosion. Screens, arches etc. New window, door and sunroof seals.
Engine & Fuelling: Intensive engine service including oil, filters, plugs, leads, distributor service and cap (the bobweights are fine), reconditioned injectors, new fuel pipes, new tank senders.
Cooling system: Replaced with new electric auxillary fan, main fan blade, viscous coupling, hoses all oils and filters,
Transmission: oil service and gearbox filter.
Exhaust: stainless steel system from simply performance. I retained the original with the car
Air conditioning: Overhaul including condenser receiver drier, converted to r134a – it is ice cold
Cruise control overhaul: works as it should.
Suspension and Braking:
-Front, new adjustable shock absorbers, wheel bearings, discs and pads
-Rear – subframe removed, stripped shotblasted and powder coated. New discs, pads, adjustable shock absorbers, new wheel bearings.
Steering: Reconditioned steering rack
Audio: New Bluetooth stereo and electric arial, original stere retained.
Wheels and Tyres: The Kent Alloys were refurbished with New UniRoyal Rain Expert Tyres.
The car has done about 1500 miles since completed and and wants for nothing. A couple of bits of bubbling have come back, annoyingly a 5p size bit under front screen (the rest of it is perfect as is rear screen) and nearside arch. I’d say mechanically the car is pretty much as new after the overhaul. Bodywork, I’d imagine a well looked after polished on Sundays 7 year old Daimler. The car was ordered new by the owner of a chain of insurance brokers in 1992 in the North East. Whilst the registered keeper changed between himself, his wife and his business periodically, it remained in his ownership until 2019. From what I have traced it went to an auction, then to a classic car dealer, where it was sold to a Gentleman in Kent. He kept the car for about a year until covid necessitated a sale and he sold it to a friend. This person kept it for about 9 months but had no indoor storage and I purchased from him in 2021.
