Description
This Steyr-Puch 500 is a first series example from 1958. This model corresponds to its Italian sister from which it was derived, the 'N' version, from which it inherited many features, such as the wheels with 12-inch rims, which had never been produced up to that point; the 'wind-up' doors, i. e. hinged at the rear; and the ventilation grilles, which would be replaced by position lights from 1959. There were, however, many differences with the equivalent Italian Nuova 500 'N' in the details and bodywork finish; the different front frieze and the rear bonnet with increased air intakes to improve cooling stood out. The interior was also different with more refined finishes and less basic upholstery, but above all, the engine was different. The Fiat engine, originally 479 cc with 13 hp, had just been upgraded to 15 hp but did not solve some of its congenital defects. The Steyr-Puch engine, mated to a ZF gearbox, was radically different: a 493 cc air-cooled aluminium boxer twin-cylinder, which developed power comparable to the Fiat engine on paper, with 16 hp declared, but was in practice more exploitable, due to the more progressive and less rough delivery, and was much better in terms of vibrations and comfort. Excellent 'restoration project' with engine totally overhauled by expert mechanic. The car has original Austrian documents. Booklet already officially translated at the Court in Vienna (sworn translation) useful for new registration in Italy.
