Description

1997 Caterham 7 1800 VX Super Sprint
Registration: Q422CMX
Chassis Number: SDKRLCAXCV0030444
Mileage: 8, 950mls

First registered on the 19th December 1997 this lovely 1800 VX Super Sprint was built on the 8th September 1997 for the Earls Court Motor Show that October. It was the launch car for the Caterham Classic 1600 VX and supplied as such and it is the car pictured in Chris Rees’s “The Magnificent 7” page 113 for the Classic VX 1600.

Following the Motor Show Caterham sold it to its first owner (having not mentioned it was the Motor Show car) who started doing some Goodwood track days with it (he was an early member of the GRRC) however found that Q422 ran out of puff on the Lavant Straight – so he went back to Caterham and had the 1800 Super Sprint upgrade done along with having the Aero Screens changed for full windscreen and weather kit and the original brushed aluminium bodywork polished to assist keeping it clean! During his tenure he managed to clock up 6, 351 miles before part exchanging back at Caterham in September 1999.

Between September 1999 and September 2022 only just over another 1, 000 miles were added and apparently most of the time Q422 had resided in a small private collection. Structurally Q422 is superb and presents very well, drives superbly with all the right noises from the (original) 4-into-1 competition exhaust and the twin 40 Webbers.

I have just fully serviced Q422 with genuine oil filters, genuine sump baffle foam (as there was no record of this ever being done), Fuchs Titan race oil and Redline synthetic oils in the gearbox and diff. The cam belt was changed in September 2022 at 7, 536 miles and there are plenty of old MOT’s to verify the mileage along with a copy of the original build sheet stating it to be for the Motor Show, a copy of the original press pack with photo’s from the launch, copy invoices to the first and second owners, correspondence from Caterham stating it to be the Motor Show car, copy of Steve Rees’s book (signed) and correspondence between myself and the original owner (who had the 1800 Super Sprint conversion done and did the majority of the miles in it)

Full hood, side screens and tonneau cover included along with the wind deflectors photographed on the car (my preferred way of using it!) and its ready to go. MOT expires 07/ 09/ 2024 and it really is great fun to drive and enjoy.
