‘One to buy’ rare 1 of around 200 UK supplied RHD 1969 built Alfa Romeo 105 1750 spider ‘boat tail’ registered Feb 1970 UK. Star of ‘The Graduate.’ Excellent history file dating back to 1983.
As a consequence of its sensational Pininfarina and starring role in the 1967 hit movie ‘The Graduate’, Alfa Romeo’s 105 Spider became an automotive icon that stayed in production for nearly 30 years. Originally launched in March 1966 at the Geneva Motor Show, the original all alloy dual overhead cam inline four cylinder engine was subsequently replaced by an enlarged ‘1750’ version at the Brussels motor show in 1968. In addition to more power (122BHP), the Spider 1750 Veloce was a much torquier machine with 137ft-lb on tap at 5500 rpm compared to 102ft-lb at 5500 rpm for the ongoing variant. The suspension, brakes and interior were also improved for what was undoubtedly the best Type 105 ever produced by Alfa.
Living its life mostly around London until 12/ 10/ 1985, a young lady called Frida fell in love and boight the car and lovingly named it “Boris”.
Frida said “I truly loved that car, it was the only time getting from A to B was perfectly spent. I cried when I was forced into selling.”
Frida reluctantly sold Boris in the early 2000s, where it eventually ended up with a Mr Nixon in 2005 who lovingly fully restored the body and repainted; however, life circumstances forced it into dry storage.
Then in around 2023 he sold it to DTR European Sportscars Ltd near Croydon who had the intention of selling it on as a full recommission and restoration however, that never happened and so they reverted to selling it as a project. In October 2023 it started an extensive recommissioning using as many of the original parts as possible.
Although, it was sadly not as cheap as the historic receipts, it underwent a mechanical recommissioning, including brakes, full engine bay recommission, coolant system rework, cosmetic and interior, electrical, full carburettor rebuild, ignition refresh, steering wheel refurbishment, interior refresh and retrim, new tyres and full body detail, plus much more. Final finishing and new mohair roof completed the car ready for the summer.
