Description

Welcome to the sale of my 1989 Audi 90 Quattro 2. 2 TURBO!

On 105, 142 miles

I’ll start by saying that this is being sold as a project car. The MOT ran out at the end of March. As I’ve moved and am losing storage, I don’t currently have the means to get another MOT done.

I’ve owned this fantastic car for 3 years now, I’ve loved my ownership and if I had a choice, I wouldn’t be letting it go. I’ve done plenty of trips and shows with it and it’s been a fantastic motorway car as well as being serious fun on smaller roads. It gets a lot of attention and it’s always made me look back and smile when parking up anywhere. I will be absolutely gutted to let it go.

Visually, the car is pretty much standard apart from 17” replica BBS wheels, which I was going to change out as it scrapes the tiniest bit over bigger bumps in the road. The tyres are Yokohama BlueEarth GTs in very good condition with lots of tread.

The bodywork is in relatively decent order for one of these. A couple I’ve seen for sale recently (which is very few!) have been in worse condition. That said, there is some corrosion to the bottom of the doors, as you’ll see in the pictures. I don’t believe the underside is too bad, but from the last MOT inspection, the rear suspension could do with a shot blast and powder coat due to surface corrosion.

The interior is not terrible, but as you’ll see from the pictures, the headlining is sagging and some of the door card fabric could do with re-trimming/ re-adhering. There is no radio as the previous aftermarket unit broke, and I never got round to replacing it. The front has rubber mats, but the carpet as a whole could do with a good clean.

Mechanically is where this car differs quite a bit. You have the 2. 2 KV engine, but some serious work was carried out prior to my purchase:

- Elring MLS head gasket with 1mm spacer shim
- 9:1 compression
- New big and main bearings
- New crank seals
- New water pump, timing belt, aux belt
- New alternator
- New thermostat
- Oil and filter service
- Coolant
- Engine fully painted
- Factory Audi 4. 2 V8 B7 RS4 clutch, modified to fit factory b3 flywheel
- Most small hoses replaced with silicon
- New radiator
- New intercooler
- Custom boost pipes and hoses.
- Custom exhaust manifold
- Oil return into block, oil feed
- Custom downpipe in two pieces, heat wrapped.
- Custom billet fuel rail.
- Custom VAG fuel pressure regulator
- Custom Wastegate
- Subaru TD04 turbo (gives plenty upgrade options) 1. 4 bar by 2400rpm
- Turbo blanket
- Injectors rated at 440cc/ min at 4 bar (×5)
- 3 bar VAG map sensor
- Throttle Position Sensor
- Microsquirt Ecu with custom motorsport spec braided loom- giving full live mapping and diagnostics
- All K-jetronic fuel system and wiring sympathetically removed
- ICV working as it should
- Overboost protection
- New front shocks
- New front springs
- Brakes serviced
- New ABS sensors and wires.
- New fuel pipes and hoses front to back,
- New uprated fuel pump.
- New fuel filter.
- Recent exhaust system.
- New front wings and paint
- Front subframe, ARB and struts shot blasted, primed and painted.
- New battery.

Naturally, this work was 3 years ago, but it’s only done about 2, 000 miles since! (Work carried out in early 2021 at around 103, 000 miles)
Currently, the mapping is a bit out on start up, so it fires up straight away, but needs a bit of throttle for a couple of seconds to keep it from stalling. After this it runs very well and is pretty powerful for what it is. I’m told by the previous owner that it could be tuned up to be even faster.

Currently, the turbo has no filter on the intake side, the previous pancake style filter needed replacing, so it was removed, but has yet to be replaced.

The original Quattro diff switch stopped working, so the previous owner replaced it with a flick switch. This has unfortunately broken, so the diff is currently in locked mode.

I did an oil and filter service about a year ago, so another one is probably due on time.

If I were able to keep this amazing bit of kit, I’d do the following:
- Exhaust currently has a pretty major blow, which sounds like it could be the manifold gasket, so I’d get that sorted
- Find another filter for the turbo inlet
- Rear suspension blast and powdercoat
- Wheel replacement for 16”
- Sort out the bodywork imperfections
- Sort out the headlining and door cards
- Get a rolling road map done
- Another oil and filter service
- Front discs and pads

There are a few spares with the car (mudflaps, oil filter, distributor, etc.) and there is a decent amount of paperwork including the original service book.

If you’d like any more pics or info, please let me know.
I don’t live close to the car any more, but I’m happy to arrange viewings for when I can get over.

The car is located near Faringdon in Oxfordshire and will need trailering away as it has no MOT.

Thank you for taking the time to read through! The car has had such a huge amount of work carried out not too long ago. Someone with the resources could do the few minor fixes and have themselves a spectacular car.

Once the bits of work are done, you’d have a complete one off that would not only surprise people on the road, but would bring a lot of attention at any car event.

I’m truly upset to be having to let it go, but I feel that I’ve priced it quite fairly given the amount of work that has gone into it. I’m sure a lot of the parts alone would come close to the asking price!
