The Citroën type H: A classic in Europe
The Citroën Type H, designed by the French company Citroën, holds a unique place in the history of European automotive technology. This delivery van, produced from 1947 to 1982, is easily recognizable by its distinctive 'corrugated iron' bodywork. With various variants, the HY being the most renowned, this vehicle succeeded the TUB (Traction Utilitaire de type B). The H series remained virtually unchanged for 34 years, an unparalleled record for a delivery van. In the Netherlands, over 10, 000 HY vans were assembled between 1963 and 1970 at Citroën Nederland's facility on Stadionplein in Amsterdam.
A special story: The ex-BB hospital van
This particular Citroën HY has a remarkable history. Originally in service with the Civil Defense (BB), it served as a hospital van in the 1970s. Completely restored with remarkably low mileage, this HY is one of the last in its pristine condition. During its service years, this HY operated in multiple locations, as documented. The retractable roof, originally intended for extra protection against sun and rain, now offers various possibilities such as expansion for a food truck or camping cover.
From margraten to Katwijk: The journey of the HY
In 1974 and 1975, this HY was adapted into a hospital van in Margraten, South Limburg, by the Civil Defense itself. With four units in 1974 and another five in 1975, each medical platoon had three interconnectable hospital vans. After the dissolution of the Civil Defense in 1986, the vans were distributed among the Red Cross, the fire department, and the Public Health Service. In 1991, this HY was converted into a camper and given a new license plate: 62-65-ZB.
