4 wheel drive The van has done about two hundred miles since new engine and gearbox. The pd engine was bought as a kit from Eurospares a Californian company who no longer supply for vw. The gearbox was the last one they had in stock in a SouthAfrican warehouse and, after some upgrades cost just over six thousand pounds. The upgrades included longer stronger gear-pairs for 3rd and 4th gears, a limited slip-diff, oil baffles for more efficient oil distribution and a de-coupler for use of 2wheel drive when needed. The van also has dash-operated diff- locks front and back. So there are three knobs on the dash - one for each of the diff-locks plus the de-coupler. The viscous coupling was recently exchanged for a new one.
With the new engine the van needed a new wiring loom. The under-pan is bespoke and would fit a normal T3. Then it spent four years having its bodywork done and re-painted. The sun roof is a rarity and is now in good working condition having been repaired and greaced up.
She has captain's seats and a JVC radio. She has two ECUs. one which came with the new engine and makes it go faster and the other is one that I bought separately and is the "right" ECU for the engine and gives better milage which is the one that it is using now.
She has a good pull-out bed of 'M1' standard with two seats and two three-point seatbelts. There is no other 'camper-van' equipment on it though. This restoration and upgrade has cost nearly twice the asking price as is so often the case. The sun-roof is great and very little expense has been spared on the rest of the van. She has the chrome strip on all the window rubbers - including the opening quarter-lights which were not available until recently.
