Description
1978 BMW R80/ 7 scrambler, custom, rebuild, including engine and electrics.
I original bought this bike in 2004 and then sold it to a friend in 2010. Less than a year later I bought it back off him!
When I re-bought the bike in 2010 I set about a process of modifying and customising it whilst trying to keep it usable and retaining some of its patina.
Matching engine and frame numbers.
Invoice and MOT history goes back to 2002. All work is documented with either receipts or photos.
Oil changes have been done by myself (receipts for oil & filters). Larger jobs and repairs have been done by Victory Motorcycles, Baines Racing, Bob Porecha and The Boxer Man.
Boyer electronic ignition kit.
Daytona Nano II speedometer.
‘Toaster’ tank fitted. Painted by BCR in Bushey, Herts.
Wheel rims, frame, swingarm, rear subframe, handlebars have been powder coated in satin black in 2018 by P&R Finishing, Berkhamsted.
Steering head and swingarm bearings replaced.
Clutch was checked in 2018 when the engine and gearbox was out of the frame and had little wear.
Rear aluminium mudguard and cut down front mudguard.
Aluminium battery box and Oydessy battery.
Wider handlebars fitted.
Almost every bolt is now stainless steel.
Keihan stainless steel exhaust and balance pipe.
Silencers are reverse cone megaphone which are on the loud side!
Engine top end re-build and check carried out by Baines Racing (John) in 2014.
Carbs stripped and rebuilt in 2015 by Bob Porecha and rebalanced in 2021 by Victory Motorcycle.
Forks stripped and rebuilt in 2018 by Victory Motorcycles.
Whole new wiring loom fitted in 2022 by Steve Hallam at Motorcycle Wiring Company in South Croydon.
The bike comes with 2 different sub frames, mudguards and seat so you can switch between the two, see photo.
The bike is registered as Historic with the DVLA so it is exempt from vehicle tax, MOT & ULEZ.
It has had a recent oil change and a new pair of Bridgestone BT46 tyres and inner tubes fitted.
The overall condition of the bike is very good but it is NOT a mint show bike, see photos.
It is a 46 year old bike that has proved to be reliable and usable. I have ridden it to the Isle of Man and plenty of weekends trips to Wales. However, unlike a modern motorcycle it does require some TLC and some mechanical sympathy.
Over the past 5 years i have used the bike less and less (i have too many other bikes) and it seems a real shame that it is not being used.
Bad points.
The silencers are quite noisy (well I think so). You could either replace them or pack them with wadding. The silencers are starting to show some surface rust (the header pipes and balance pipe are stainless steel and are fine).
Being unfaired there is quite a bit of windblast over 70mph.
It has no mirrors fitted although there is nothing stopping you from fitting a pair.
The shorter front mudguard does mean that there is more spray when riding in the rain (over your legs and engine).
The bike is located and in Radlett, Herts.
Viewing is best at the weekend.
