LHD 1969 PORSCHE 912 LWB, 3 Owners, ORIGINAL, MATCHING NUMBERS, 50K Original Low Milage
The 1969 Porsche 912 LWB is the last year of 912’s and the only year they produced the long wheel base version. Many people consider this year to be the most collectable and valuable because of the rarity. The long wheel base cars handle the higher speeds better than their short wheel based counterparts. 912s are legendary cars and will only become more valuable and iconic as time goes on – definitely a fully-respected model in the classic range.
This original example has matching numbers and also has the benefit of a 5-speed gearbox as well as the all important 5-dial dash and was one of the last built before production ended in late 1969.
This 912 was originally purchased by Joseph Wildinger Jr on 7th May 1969 at Autohaus in Fairborn, Ohio. His choice of options included the 5-speed manual transmission, chrome wheels, bumper guards, rear tow hook antenna and loudspeaker. Joseph Wildinger paid the total sum of $5, 852 and received a $100 trade-in allowance for his 1960 Volkswagen Beetle. Incredibly for a car of this age, the original bill of sale documenting this information is included in the extensive history file we have for the vehicle together with the original maintenance booklet. Importantly this document lists the original selling dealer, the first buyer, and the chassis and engine numbers.
Joseph Wildinger was a US Air Force Pilot who was stationed outside of the USA for long periods of time. The car remained in the US and was seldom driven. Hence the incredibly low mileage of just 48, 000 and its fantastic condition. At some point the battery died and the vehicle was put into storage where it sat unused in an enclosed garage for many years. Joseph remained the owner of this lovely 912 from 1969 until 2015 when the car was taken out of storage and sold.
The new owners, Vintage Excellence, spent $12, 000 on the vehicle carrying out a comprehensive service and other work required on the car, from tyres and brakes to new shift bushings and a complete engine reseal and tune-up. It starts up, idles perfectly, shifts gears smoothly and is an absolute dream to drive, delivering a smile to one’s face when behind the wheel. Even the doors have that perfect ping sound them when they are closed. Original good solid vintage cars are hard to find these days.
This stunning little 912 also comes complete with its original and complete tool kit which is now over 50 years old. It has its original door/ ignition key and glove box key and the original Sisal dealer-optioned floor mats. There is a receipt dated a few days after the purchase date for these mats as well as a wood shift knob.
Still in its original colours of Burgundy Red with Black Leather interior, it comes complete with its original service book, hand books, bill of sale and lots of history authenticating the low mileage of 48, 000 miles and single ownership from when it was sold new in 1969 until 2015 when it was brought and imported in to the UK.
I purchased the car in 2018 when it was added to my collection at the time and no expenses spared on maintenance. I later sold it to a very good friend, just pre pandemic and unfortunately he didn’t get much use and I took back care of it in his absence to keep it running and regular maintained. It is an absolute joy to drive and will be very sad when it leaves. This example is totally original with excellent provenance. Being historic it also benefits from being ULEZ exempt and Road Tax free. It also does not legally require an MOT.
Porsche 912’s are becoming a rare edition and a good original example such as this one is rarer still. On the road, she is a delight to drive with nimble handling and enough power to thrill, though she is just as happy to cruise all day at 70 mph. You could look at 100 cars and not find one as honest as this 912. I personally love it; it is not a perfectly restored show car but it is far, far from a neglected tired car. It has just the right amount of patina and that wonderful old Porsche smell. It is a completely original car in exceptional condition for its age. A wise investment which is sure to reward you both financially and emotionally.
