Description

1934 Hillman Aero Minx Two Seat Sport.

Introduced at the 1932 London Motor Show, the Areo Minx was the company's first small sports car. Fitted with a lower chassis which was under-slung at the rear, shorter wheelbase and a more powerful 1185cc four cylinder engine featuring a special higher compression ratio aluminium cylinder head and a more sporting rear axle ratio. A neat remote lever controlled the four speed gearbox and there were spoked wheels with centre-lock spinners to underline the sporting theme. There was a rakish new radiator shell set off by a lowered bonnet line, with the sporting appeal further enhanced by a folding windscreen.

The resulting layout was then offered with a selection of specially commissioned sporting bodies from leading coachbuilders. Good-looking, smartly turned out and rated at 41BHP, this more than matched or in many cases exceeded the competition (and MG’s) of the time, making the Aero excellent value for money and a popular, successful mount for amateurs in the long distance road trials and rallies of the 1930's. Raced at Brooklands and winning the Welsh trail in 1934.

The 'Aero' Minx featured fashionable streamlined coachwork in 'Art Deco' style. Initially in saloon form the stylish Aero Minx would also become available in a number of body styles including one of the rarest the two-seater sports featured here. This car is believed to be one of only six with this body to still survive and one of the prettiest open top two seaters ever built; designed by Lord 'Freddie' March, (of Goodwood fame) the fully disappearing hood, side screens and hidden spare wheel keep the streamline design very clean.

In 2018 the engine and gearbox were both fully rebuilt and are barely run in with less than 500 miles on them. With all new steering and rebuilt rear suspension this Aero really is a joy to drive with a good turn of speed

Full weather equipment comprises a hood, side screens and split tonneau cover. A comprehensive history file is present containing paperwork dating back to when the car was originally restored in the early 1990’s.

An ideal opportunity to purchase what is known as one of the most attractive and important motor cars from the Art Deco period.
