Description

1960 Matchless G3LS 350cc ex-Auxiliary Fire Service.
Owned since 2021
MOT Exempt
A great bike and only selling to make room in the garage. In 1977, the Northern Constabulary purchased six Matchless 350 G3LS motorcycles from the Scottish Home Department, which had been part of a large batch produced for use by the Auxiliary Fire Service.

These motorcycles were largely kept in reserve by the AFS for use in the event of future armed conflict, until declared surplus to requirements in the 1970s.

The Northern Constabulary purchased these for “evaluation purposes”, and they were allocated to various parts of the Force area for general patrol purposes.

Painted in military green from new, they were "police-ified" by the Northern Constabulary by the simple expedient of re-painting the petrol tank white.

They were eventually deemed obsolete for police purposes and were sold at auction in Inverness on 11th July 1980.

The motorcycle here originally bore the registration 444 ALD and was bought from the Northern Constabulary by Raymond Vickerstaff and subsequently sold to a Mr Home, who had worked with the motorcycle during its policing days.
