Offered for sale today is my Toyota MR2 Mark 1 AW11 targa top in Super Red (3E5), first registered in March 1988. The car is powered by a free revving 1587cc in-line four, twin overhead camshafts, 16 valve engine located just behind the cockpit which nicely pushes the car from 0-60mph in 7. 7sec and provides a top speed of 119mph, complimented by independent suspension with MacPherson struts.
For those of you who don’t know the marque, the Mk1 MR2 is a modern classic that is incredibly fun to drive, has good fuel consumption and is easily maintained. This model being the targa top has the benefit of a pair of removable glass roof panels for wind in the hair fun, which can be stored in their original bags behind the seats along with the clip in roof shades.
This example came into my possession in 2014 from a chap who was selling it on behalf of his mother who incidentally had been the only owner from new. I purchased the car because it is completely original, never having had any work done, and has travelled a mere and genuine 28, 700 miles since new, which is exceptionally low mileage for its age.
It really is a superb rust-free example having been garaged it’s entire life by the previous owner and is in excellent condition. I have driven higher mileage Mk1’s and she feels wonderfully taught and precise on the road in comparison, probably akin to how she would have felt to drive from new. The leather seats are perfect with no splits or creases, and the interior including the boot lining, carpets and frunk (where the spare wheel is stored under the bonnet) are all immaculate.
All electrical systems are fully operational including the windows, door mirrors and the original radio cassette, which is in good working order along with the electric aerial which pops up when turned. There is paperwork that was handed to me which I will pass on together with all that I have accrued, including the stamped service booklet and owners manual contained in the original wallet. The original tool roll is also present and complete.
She will be presented with a fresh MOT, (the car currently being SORN) and has had a new rear exhaust section fitted together with a full set of new Bridgestone tyres, that have next to no miles on them. I have only used her during dry summer months and she has been garaged throughout my ownership.
Incidentally the car was featured in the March 2017 issue of Classic and Sports Car magazine, a copy of which will made available to the new owner, with all photographs taken during the shoot.
This really is a very special car and for me a very regrettable sale, knowing I will never see one like her again in such a pristine original condition - examples such as this rarely come on the market. She is an impressive example that is ready to use and enjoy.
