The Appeal
The MGB remains a hugely popular mainstay of the classic car scene. This is thanks to a blend of desirable traits including excellent availability of parts, an engaging and enjoyable drive, and low running and ownership costs.
This example is a very well-presented car and has clearly been professionally restored and painted in its past. In its current ownership it has covered just a few hundred miles in the last year or so. As such it represents an excellent ownership prospect for fans of this archetypal British roadster.
The History and Paperwork
- Built and first registered in 1973 during the favoured chrome bumper production period
- Subsequently the car has been used and enjoyed by 11 owners
- This gives an average period of ownership of around four and a half years
- The current owner bought the car in August 2021
- The car was supplied at that stage by MG specialists Minchin’s of Goodwood
- The car is only being sold now due to lack of use by the current owner
- There is a good level of provenance providing paperwork provided with the car
- This includes the current V5 in the name of the owner
- A number of hard copy previous MOTs are included
- A number of invoices for work undertaken are present too
- The MGB is registered as a Historic Vehicle so is understood to be MOT and VED exempt
The Interior
- This MGB benefits from a superb restored and retrimmed interior
- Despite this it faithfully evokes the British sports car experience from the early 70’s
- The cabin is predominantly finished in black
This MGB retains the original, period-correct charm of the roadster’s interior. It is in excellent, restored condition throughout with the “black on black” colour scheme working very well indeed with the Flame Red paintwork.
The deeply bolstered seats are finished in soft leather with the centre sections box pleated and perforated for additional comfort and support. The black dashboard is painted in a textured crackle finish and will look reassuringly familiar to virtually any car enthusiast of a certain age.
The edge bound carpets look to be in excellent fettle as do the vinyl trimmed door cards. The sublime wood rimmed Mota-Lita steering wheel and varnished wooden gear knob provide a splash of contrasting colour in this predominantly black cabin.
The painted metal on show in the boot lends further credence to the quality of the former restoration. This compartment also provides a home for the full-sized wire spare wheel and associated tools. A black carpet fitted mat helps protect that pristine paintwork.
The Exterior
- The exterior is presents very well in its bright Flame Red paintwork
- The paintwork appears deep and lustrous and professionally applied
- The chromed wire wheels, affixed with twin eared , complete the period look
This MGB is a real head-turner. The enduring shape of this popular roadster looks really fetching in the shining Flame Red paintwork. The extensive areas of brightwork, which also exhibit a deep shine, only add to the period charm of this roadster.
Remembering that this MGB is fast approaching its fiftieth birthday, there are unsurprisingly a few very minor marks and blemishes in evidence upon close inspection. Our photographic package endeavours to capture these for your assessment.
The well-presented, period-faithful, chromed wire wheels really finish the car off perfectly. These 14-inch items include the iconic centre spinners and are shod in a matching set of Barum tyres. These are in the factory specification 165/80 configuration with the high and bump absorbing sidewalls.
The black fabric hood looks to be in great condition suggesting that it has been replaced in recent years. No rips or tears are evident and the rear window and quarterlights remain clear, unfogged and uncracked.
The Mechanics
- Fitted with the 1.8L BMC B-series engine which has proved to be a robust and reliable unit over many years
- Originally rated at 95bhp and 110 Ib-ft of torque with power delivered to the rear wheels
- This car has clearly been mechanically well maintained and presents well under the bonnet too
Part of the appeal of the MGB is the proven, robust, and ubiquitous B-series engine and associated ancillaries. Spares are readily available and, despite its modest output, this revvy engine endows the MGB with a spirited personality which is almost certain to bring a smile to the driver’s face.
Already proven to offer robust mechanicals, this MGB seems to have received some fastidious attention which will help future proof the mechanical condition of this classic British sports car. No mechanical issues were reported by the current owner offering the new owner of peace of mind over future ownership costs.
Given this, and with the longevity of these cars already well known, the new owner can likely look forward to many years of low-cost, wind-in-the-hair classic motoring.
Summary
Given the fact that this MGB is now very nearly fifty years old it is no surprise that bodywork and paintwork has been diligently attended to previously. In this case it appears to have been expertly done and documented with a number of invoices.
MGB’s are popular for a reason and, judging by its British sports car peers, likely to be a steadily appreciating asset as well as a very enjoyable way to spend your spare time.
