The Background
The MK2 Golf GTi being the replacement for the ground breaking MK1 Golf GTi had big shoes to fill. The original hot-hatch was a tough act to follow and the sequel is quite often not as good as the original. However, in this instance many believe it was, in fact many believe that with a little more power, a little more space and a few more creature comforts the MK2 Golf GTi is one of the best from this era.
The Golf came in 3 door and 5 door variants with a number of different trims and engine options. The sportiest versions, GTis, having the 1.8 8V and 1.8 16V engines. On top of that VW decided to up the anti and add a Supercharger to the perky little 4 cylinder and give it that extra little bit of fizz.
The G60 models were produced in limited numbers specifically in LHD for the European market, and that now makes them fairly rare. The supercharger uses a specific method of forced induction - by way of a scroll-type supercharger giving you a bigger bang for your buck making a hot hatch a very hot hatch and pushing the smiles per mile through the roof.
The History
This particular MK2 started its life in Spain, Madrid to be precise. It was purchased new from the dealer by a Spanish gentlemen and spent the first of its two registered owners in the same family, with the original owner selling it to his niece. It was then purchased by a British Aeronautical engineer that was working in Spain at the time and at some point in the early 2010's it underwent a full respray.
The British owner brought it back to the UK in circa 2016 and then shortly after he sold it. It went through another few owners before the current owner stumbled across it.
Whilst in his ownership, it has been kept as close to original as possible and dry stored. Only being taken out in good weather.
The current owner is looking to reduce his car collection and would prefer to see it go to someone who will use it.
The Paperwork
There is a fairly large file of paperwork with the car, ranging from the early Spanish Mot to even the original bill of sale. Unfortunately the service book only has a single stamp from Spain. The original Spanish plate is present if needed. The car also has two original keys including the g60 “pill key.”
The V5 is present and the car is MOT’d until July 21.
The Interior
The interior is very clean indeed and doesn’t really look to have been used. The car would have come out of the factory with electric windows and the centre console has the necessary switch locations. We are told that a previous owner had a window motor fail and couldn’t locate a replacement so they reverted to manual winders. We understand the electrics are still present if a new owner wanted to reinstate them.
The car has been fitted with some upgraded speakers in the doors and a custom stealth parcel shelf housing a set of 6x9s in the rear. Whilst these are clearly aftermarket they have been fitted in such a way to keep as much as the original look and feel as possible. So too the period correct Gamma 2 radio that has been fitted and a Parrot Bluetooth handsfree that’s been neatly hidden in the drivers door pocket.
The clocks have also been changed from KM to MPH with the speedo being changed and the mileage matched to the original clocks, although the seller is keen to point out that the milage cannot be validated, due to Spanish Mot's not containing mileage. There is photographic evidence though to back up the clock change and the original clocks are available should the new owner want to switch them back.
The carpets were also replaced with brand new ones during the cars respray.
All in all its very clean inside.
The Exterior
As already mentioned, the car has had a respray in the early 2010's and has been very well kept since so the paintwork is still in great condition. As an added bonus, the seller has as large PDF file with detailed images of the work done. There are a few small paint defects visible, the most obvious is a small dent on the nearside rear quarter and a small blemish on the rear edge of the boot which is mainly visible with the bootlid open.
When the respray was undertaken, the car benefitted from brand new bumpers and arch plastics all-round being fitted and also a brand new properly bonded in windscreen. This particular example is made even more rarer by the fact that it does not have a sunroof.
Those with a keen eye will note that the tailgate is missing its GTI black vinyl around the window, when it was removed for the respray the owner decided not to replace it as they preferred the clean look but the current owner has one to go with the car which just needs reapplying.

The wheels are said to have been fitted from factory and are in fantastic condition, the tyres have great tread but are a few years old so may need replacing at some point due to dates/deterioration not tread depth.
The car is also fitted with a Jetex stainless exhaust system which consists of at least the rear and middle box.
Having originated from Spain the car is clean and original underneath with no visible rust to the shell It even still sports its factory paint under there.
The Mechanics
The car starts first time every time and has been without issue throughout the current owners tenure. The car starts stops and handles as it should and a full laser alignment of the tracking has ensured it handles like it’s on rails. It also sounds great through that stainless exhaust system.
The car has had a few desirable mechanical upgrades which have given it a little more oomph,
• Supercharger refreshed/overhauled by Jabba (stage 2)
• Jabba ecu tune
• Schrick cams
• Rallye intercooler
• KW V1 Adjustable coil-overs
The car had a full service towards the end of last year (21 miles ago). The MOT advisories picked up in September were tyre rubber deteriorating, a wheel bearing and a cv boot that need replacing.
The Appeal
The MK2 Golf was and still is one of the best hot hatches from the 1980s/90s. With VWs reputation for build quality, decent handling and a choice of rev happy engines, what’s not to like.
The Golf was more than just a toy to throw around some twisties and put a smile on your face, the great thing about a hot hatch is not only can it provide the above mentioned smiles when required but it can pretty much also do everything else. Practicality in the form of a hatch back meant you could do your shopping in your sports car rivalling hatch back or even just drive it to work and back through out the week if you felt like it and it would lap it all up.
Right now MK2 Golfs, especially sought after models like this G60, are rising in price as all of the people that had enjoyed them first time around are now a little older and can afford a second car as a toy to play with. True, they aren’t quite matching the rocketing prices that their neighbours from Ford have seen of late from their 80s classics but that in itself makes the VW Golf GTi somewhat of a bargain. Our advice, grab them now while the going is good, their value is only going one way.
