THE APPEAL
The Range Rover ‘P38a’ is as much of a status symbol today as it was when it was new – opulent, well-equipped and exceptionally grand, it’s a car that has earned a huge enthusiast following in the 27 years since it was launched.
And with prices of Range Rover Classics going stratospheric, the P38’s moment in the sun is nigh – they’re already creeping up, and it’s not surprising because as well as being iconic, they’re really lovely to drive.
This one’s a very special example. A late model from 2001 – the last full year of production - it’s an upper-spec Vogue with the flagship 4.6-litre V8 in discreet Oxford Blue. A luxurious modern classic and a depreciation-proof asset.
THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK
- Original handbook and Land Rover wallet
- Service book stamped to 112,486 miles
- UK V5C
- MOT until January 2023
Supplied with the P38 are the original Land Rover book pack wallet, handbooks, a sat nav guide, audio manual and a service book, which is stamped to 112,486 miles, or 9,000 miles ago, in 2019.
It was supplied new by Guy Salmon Land Rover of Portsmouth and spent most of its life in Surrey, subsequently serviced by Hunters Land Rover of Guildford and by independent specialists since 2008.
It has never had a major MOT failure or any bodywork advisories.
THE INTERIOR
- Magnolia leather trim
- Heated seats
- On and off-road sat nav
- Climate control and CD changer
- Original floor mats included
In Vogue spec the Range Rover is a genuine luxury vehicle with wonderfully supple leather seats and astonishing levels of standard equipment – electric heated seats, leather-trimmed door cards, a premium Harman Kardon audio system, steering wheel audio and climate control to name but a few. This one, being a late model, also has side airbags built into the seats.
One neat feature – albeit outdated now – is the factory sat-nav system, which features both on and off-road settings.
This one’s in great condition and has its original premium floor mats, though these show some signs of wear. The only issue that will need sorting (if you’re fussy) is some slightly baggy headlining in the rear – a very common issue with P38s and not a difficult one to get sorted.
The luggage area is in good order and comes with a tailored plastic load liner.
THE EXTERIOR
- Oxford Blue Metallic
- 18-inch option alloys
- Optional light guards
- Very clean and smart
- Pirelli Tyres in excellent condition
Finished in metallic Oxford Blue paint, the P38 looks wonderful and is in very smart condition overall with no notable flaws. The inner rear door shuts and lower tailgate are sound order, which will be good news to any P38 fan – there’s just one tiny bubble on the bottom of one of the lower arches.
The underside looks to be structurally sound and aside from some very minor scratches on the door mirrors and bonnet it’s in very smart and well-presented condition, with smart alloy wheels and optional lamp guards. One wheel centre cap is missing, but otherwise it’s excellent.
THE MECHANICS
- 4.6-litre V8
- Automatic transmission
- Functioning air suspension
- High and low ratio gears engage properly
- Drives really well
This is the 4.6 V8, which is the flagship P38 engine option with 222bhp and 0-60 in 9.7 seconds. It has covered just under 121,500 miles and runs sweetly, with no unusual noises or apparent issues.
The air suspension is still fitted (many have been converted to coil springs) and it works through all of its settings, from access height to fully raised. The low-ratio transmission engages as it ought to.
SUMMARY
This is a very smart example of a late P38a, with the highest-power engine and a very good specification. It’s a grand, stately and tasteful old thing that exudes luxury and and is presented in good overall condition.
