NO RESERVE 1999 Saab 93 Viggen

Highlights

  • Boasting a huge portfolio of work carried out by the same garage for years, there is likely few of this marque with such a comprehensive history as this 93
  • Fully repainted in 2019 to a exquisite standard, really preserving a icon of Saab history, a true future classic  Absolutely superb condition throughout, clearly benefiting from years of careful ownership by the three previous keepers and the current vendor being a Saab enthusiast
  • One of around 4,300 Viggen examples produced, this is not simply a badge, laden with factory uprated performance components

The Appeal

Although Saab cars are not the most common sight on the roads today, the legacy of the quality and performance left behind is second to none. The 93 range, the most popular model produced by Saab saw various body types and states of tune with the Viggen model being the most exclusive, elusive and most powerful to date boasting 230BHP under the right foot not simply being a state of tune, but receiving many uprated parts from the factory allowing the car to be as reliable as possible, living up to its name Viggen or ‘Thunderbolt”.
This 93 Viggen has been properly pampered, unlike many that have succumbed to high miles or care-free tuners and let’s be honest, really does look amazing and certainly not 24 years old!!
It is safe to say that the next owner of this beautiful Swedish hot-coupe will not only be receiving one of the finest examples on offer today but will enjoy one of the finest driving experiences of the era.

The History and Paperwork

  • Every original booklet has been retained in the original Saab wallet with the service book having been stamped every year up until 2017, a vast majority of which were performed by D&J Saab specialists and Saab dealerships
  • Every single service carried out by D&J has been backed up with the original receipt complete with all the work performed
  • The car was fully and professionally repainted in an original Saab colour Eucalyptus green with a total of 140 hours of labour costing in excess of £6,000
  • Every MOT document has been retained since the cars first test
Clearly by some of the invoices that we have seen, the car has seen the best servicing and attention towards maintenance with everything well documented and quite well detailed by the garages including service items such as flushing oil, poly-bushes, waxoyl, fuel system cleaners and more, really seeing every base covered and maintained as best as possible. An original bill of sale when the car was just three years old, sold in Edinburgh at a Saab dealer.

The Interior

  • Brilliantly well preserved throughout showing little sign of wear and generally very clean and tidy. An excellent example of the marque with little need of maintenance necessary
  • The wonderful black leather seats have deep and wide bolsters for superlative support for the driver and passenger and have the Viggen logo embossed into the back of the seats
  • The leather is in great nick, only the drivers seat really showing any wear of note which ultimately is just light bolster wear and discolouration, an item that could be improved with ease but the bolsters themselves retain great shape
  • Being the Viggen model, the sporty front seats have complete electronic adjustment, heating and in the case of the driver's seat, four memory settings too
  •  The leather theme is carried out to the door cars and rear passenger panels, dressed in the same black leather and stitching all of thich are in great order, even the drivers side shows no evidence of excessive use
  • Centre console mounted ignition is a quirk of Saab along with the cockpit style dashboard and simplistic gauges although less pronounced than it’s earlier counterparts, does hark back to Saabs affinity with aviation and make the driving experience special and unique, a truly fabulous place to be
  • In the boot area things are very tidy and clearly well cared for, everything in its rightful place and retaining the original Saab branded warning triangle, jack and wrench
  • All the switches are in superb order with no evidence of any particular wear, still wearing a nice matte finish. The dashboard LCD display is still clear along with the speedometer and accompanying gauges including that fabulous turbo gauge

The Exterior

Having been subjected to a full body respray in 2019, although not an the cars original colour which was black, this Saab is in truly exquisite condition, the paint being of an exceptional finish, possibly better than the usual production line paint job, being wet-sanded and polished to a glistening shine that accentuates the metallic finish and deep Eucalyptus green.
  • A very slight chip to the paint that has corroded very slightly by the boot catch
  • Despite its 24 years, the black plastics that adorn the car and usually subject to fading are all still nice, black and seemingly undamaged, all well fitted since the repaint and no evidence of any overspray
  • 17’’ Saab Viggen wheels were bought brand new by the previous owner, painted in a bright and glossy silver with no evidence of damage from kerbing and shod in Toyo Proxies T1R tyres.
  • The Viggen logo we have already seen on the seats is carried through on to the front wings in the form of a blue and yellow chevron badge which are original, both in good order with one having some corrosion to one corner
  • All around the car the lights are in great order, the front headlamps that are glass, undamaged and the original Valeo units. The rears are clear with some very minor cracking that does not particularly affect them visually but these too are likely the original unit
  • All of the panels are beautifully straight and we saw no dents, carpark dinges or abrasions. The panel gaps too are even and matching that we could tell

The Mechanics

Undoubtedly quick, the Viggen was given a punchy 230BHP from factory, boasting a bigger intercooler, reinforced gearbox casing, uprated drivelines and CV joints, improved suspension and more, resulting in a significant improvement over the regular 93 Turbo models, making a hugely desirable and rare machine.
  • The front brake discs have been replaced with motorsport inspired, grooved discs for better brake dust dispersion and cooling
  • Under the bonnet we are pleased to see that nothing has been modified, retaining a very tidy and clean look, the valve cover emblazoned with the Viggen logo
  • All the hoses and pipework look like stock items, everything is in its original place and beautifully kept
  • In 2018 the car was subjected to a vast mechanical overhaul seeing a huge amount of maintenance that will keep the car running beautifully, this included:
    • Track rod ends
    • New wishbone bushes
    • New brake pipes
    • Strip and clean all brakes
    • Power steering pipes
    • New oil cooler pipes
    • Repaint backing plates
    • New subframe brace
    • Bleed braking system
    • Tracking
  • Every MOT Document has been retained and although the MOT history is not perfectly clean, the recent work will give peace of mind as to the superb maintenance in preserving this modern classic
  • Upgraded rear exhaust section is a performance unit but is finished in a tasteful stainless tip that could be mistaken for an original item if it were not for branding on the exhaust tip

Summary

Possibly one of the finest examples on the market, this is a superb example to own one of the rarest Saab models produced, hugely desirable and still a solid performer even in today's market.
This example is truly fine, beautifully repainted and maintained, this car is a real enthusiast's machine and would be a star of any show. With only 426 examples made in 1999, this is an extremely rare car and we are pleased to see that the owners have been 100% onboard with maintaining and looking after this appreciating Swedish Thunderbolt.
