HIGHLIGHTS
- Low miles
- Rich black leather
- Long MOT
THE APPEAL
The Range Rover ‘P38a’ is as much of a status symbol today as it was when it was new – opulent, well-equipped and exceptionally grand, it’s a car that has earned a huge enthusiast following in the 27 years since it was launched.
And with prices of Range Rover Classics going stratospheric, the P38’s moment in the sun is nigh – they’re already creeping up, and it’s not surprising because as well as being iconic, they’re really quite grand to drive.
This one’s lovely. A very early post-facelift model from 1999, it’s a SE specification with the tough 4.0 V8 in Rioja Red – the most popular P38 colour.
THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK
- Original handbook
- Land Rover wallet
- UK V5C
- MOT until January 2023
This is a genuine three-owner car with just over 90,000 miles on the clock. It has the original dealer wallet with the handbook and audio guide, a UK V5C and an MOT until January next year.
THE INTERIOR
- Black leather trim
- Steering wheel audio controls
- Good headlining
- Climate control and CD changer
- Original floor mats included
In SE spec the Range Rover is a genuine luxury vehicle with wonderfully supple leather seats and astonishing levels of standard equipment – electric heated seats, leather-trimmed door cards, a premium Harman Kardon audio system, steering wheel audio and climate control to name but a few.
This one’s in fabulous condition and has no obvious faults – even the headlining is intact which is uncommon for a P38. Colour-coded accessory mats are fitted, but the originals are in the boot.
THE EXTERIOR
- Rioja Red Pearlescent paint
- 16-inch alloys
- Optional side steps
- Excellent presentation
Finished in pearlescent Rioja Red paint, the P38 looks wonderful and is in very smart condition overall with no notable flaws. The inner rear door shuts and lower tailgate are in sound order, which will be good news to any P38 fan.
The underside looks to be structurally sound and aside from some very minor areas of lacquer peel on the door mirrors and rear bumper, it’s in lovely order.
THE MECHANICS
- 4.0-litre V8
- Automatic transmission
- Functioning air suspension
- High and low ratio gears engage
This is the 4.0 V8, which is the most sought-after P38 engine option. Faster and no less economical than the 2.5 DSE and far less troublesome than the 4.6 V8. It has covered just over 90,000 miles and runs sweetly, with no unusual noises or apparent issues.
The air suspension is still fitted (many have been converted to coil springs) and it works through all of its settings, from access height to fully raised. The low-ratio transmission engages as it ought to.
SUMMARY
This is a really smart example of a late P38 in the most sought-after engine and trim combination. It’s a grand and lovely old thing that offers unrivalled luxury and comfort and is spotlessly presented in very good overall condition.
