The Appeal

The Ducati Supersport is a range of sports motorcycles featuring an air-cooled V-twin four stroke engine with desmodromic valves. The series was introduced in 1988 and continued in various guises and iterations right up to 2019. The motorcycle underwent a major update in 1999 with the design revisited by Pierre Terblanche and fuel injection introduced. These post 1999 models were available in either half faired or fully faired form.
This example is a half-faired model which was originally supplied to Japan at the end of 1999. It presents very well in Rosso Red and seems to have been lightly used throughout its Japanese life. The bike is fitted with aftermarket Pipe Werx silencers and has been fully recommissioned and is ready to use and enjoy this summer.

The History and Paperwork

  • This Supersport is understood to be a post facelift 1999 model
  • The motorcycle was originally supplied to Japan from new
  • In 2022 the Supersport was imported to the UK by Fastline Superbikes
  • They registered the Ducati in the UK in August 2022 to become the first keeper
  • The current owner almost immediately acquired the bike to become its second
  • The current owner fully recommissioned the motorcycle at that stage
  • The Supersport is now only being sold due to the owner thinning out his collection
  • Some paperwork is available from its post-import life
  • This includes the current V5 in the name of the owner
  • The Supersport holds an advisory free MOT valid until June 2023
  • There are a few invoices on-hand detailing parts procured for the recommissioning
  • Two original Ducati keys are, also, included

The Interior

  • The riding environment of the Supersport consists of a heavily sculpted saddle
  • This scoops down to accommodate riders of varying sizes
  • The pillion mount is delineated by body coloured vinyl
  • The rider has use of rear set folding alloy pegs
  • These combined with the dropped, clip on grips promotes a forward leaning riding stance
  • The rear face of the high tank is padded to aid comfort and safety
  • The pillion gets high set folding pegs which promotes a bent-knee stance
  • A painted, alloy grab handle is mounted to the rear of the saddle
  • The rider faces an instrument binnacle beneath a low mounted fairing
  • The instruments consist of three white on black CEV clocks
  • The speedometer is calibrated in kilometres per hour
  • A large tachometer and temperature gauge are also present
  • There are a number of warning lights mounted on the binnacle also
  • The remainder of the controls are mounted on the grip bases in traditional fashion
  • Twin, generously sized rear-view mirrors are fitted to the fairing
  • The grips are in great order and the levers are polished alloy items

The Exterior

  • This example is presented in Ducati Rosso Red paintwork
  • The paintwork finishes the tank, side panels, front mud guard and half fairing
  • The paintwork appears to be in great order overall
  • There are a few scrapes and chips evident upon close inspection
  • A professional repair has been undertaken to the rear mount of the tank
  • The lattice-work tubular frame is finished in an anodised gold hue
  • This ties in with the gold finish of the Brembo alloy wheels
  • These three spoke items are in a good overall condition
  • The owner reports a little flaking of the gold wheel finish in places and a little cracking of the nose fairing around the mirrors
  • This Supersport is fitted with non-standard Pipe Werx silencers
  • These are deeply chromed and exude a deep shine
  • Light lenses, fairing trim and tinted Perspex screen all present very well

The Mechanics

  • The Supersport 900ie is fitted with respected 904cc V-twin four stroke engine
  • In this iteration it is fuel injected via a Weber Marelli electronic system
  • In original fettle this unit was rated at around 80bhp at 7,500 rpm
  • The ignition is courtesy of a Marelli electronic unit
  • Power is transmitted via a six-speed gearbox and hydraulic dry clutch
  • The anodised grey finish of the engine plates and covers look to be in good condition
  • The current owner recommissioned the bike shortly after his acquisition
  • New Ducati belts were fitted, and fluids, filters and plugs were replaced
  • A new rear tyre was also fitted at that stage
  • The owner, a Ducati enthusiast, attests to the bike riding very well indeed
  • No mechanical issues were noted or reported

Summary

The Ducati Supersport 900ie was considered a motorcycle worthy of the Supersport name. It is designed with tank-hugging, high input and high output backroad blasting in mind. By modern standards 80bhp doesn’t sound much but it sounds great and is more than enough to have heaps of fun at reassuringly sensible speeds.
This is a fine example in, surely, the right colour for a modern-classic Ducati. It seems to have enjoyed light and sympathetic use throughout its life in Japan. In the UK, it finds itself in the hands of a knowledgeable Ducati enthusiast that has fully recommissioned the bike ready for use and enjoyment. He attests to the bike’s mechanical condition and makes special mention of the new clutch which is, reportedly, smooth, progressive and “unusually quiet” for a Ducati dry clutch. This is a fine Ducati immediately ready to use, enjoy and turn heads on so be sure not to miss this exciting ownership opportunity.
