NO RESERVE - 1997 P38 Range Rover 4.6 HSE

Highlights

・Brand new headliner
・Full stamped service history from new with no gaps right up to date

The Background

The P38 Range Rover is the second-generation Range Rover launched in 1994, 24 years after the introduction of the Range Rover Classic.
It included an updated version of the Rover V8 engine and offered more equipment and premium trims, positioning the vehicle above the Land Rover Discovery to face the increased competition in the SUV marketplace.
The second generation Range Rover adopted an improved electronic air suspension (EAS) which was an adaption of the system used on the 1993 - 1996 Range Rover Classic. It allows automatic, speed-determined ride-height adjustment. The five suspension heights offered by EAS are ‘Access, ‘Motorway’, ‘Standard’, ‘Off-Road’ and ‘Off-Road Extended. Height was also adjustable manually between the first four settings.

The History

The vendor confirms that the vehicle has a full service history and stamped service book. In the absence of a V5C, the number of former keepers is indeterminable however, our vehicle checks would suggest 7 former keepers. A V62 form will be completed with the new owners details and sent to DVLA.  A quick DVLA check says the car is currently untaxed and without a valid MoT.
An online MoT check suggests the vehicle received its first registration on 23rd December, 1997. It passed its last MoT – performed in January 2015 at 85,223 miles – but carried several advisories.
Note: Our agent has not seen this vehicle in person. The accompanying pictures were provided by the vendor and our agent has compiled this accompanying script based on those images.

The Interior

Commensurate with the age and mileage of the vehicle, there are signs of wear (but no evidential tears) to the leather seats which is understandable when considering the vehicle’s mileage of 89,800. The door cards, soft furnishing and headlining appear in good condition.
All the electrics – and there are many on this upper-end HSE variant – are said to be in working order, including the switchgear, instruments and front seat settings. The veneer trim inserts appear in good condition and show none of the usual age-related varnish peel or sun bleach.
On balance, the interior presents in reasonable condition, but all the leather work could benefit from a detailed cleansing and healthy rejuvenation, along with the beige plastic trims. There is a small abrasion to the under right side of the handbrake, likely caused by the driver’s jewellery over time.

The Exterior

Outside, the original red paint finish appears to be in reasonable condition, considering the car’s relatively low mileage and age of almost 25 years.
The alloy wheels present well and appear scuff-free. Both the front and rear light lenses are clear and show no hint of the sun-bleached fogging usually associated with a car of this age. However, the right front fog light is missing.

The Mechanics

Again, in the absence of any maintenance or spares paperwork, no opinion may genuinely be proffered regarding the mechanical condition of this car.

The Appeal

If there is any car that can genuinely be said to be in a class of its own, it is the Range Rover.

With its combination of on- and particularly off-round ability and high-end luxury, the many remaining P38A Range Rover examples appear to be well cared for and there is a wealth of information and technical support available at the UK Range Rover Owners Club, the members of which are as knowledgeable and enthusiastic as they come.
