The Appeal
Taking over from the iconic E30 M3, the E36 had big boots to fill. Yet fill them it did, with more power, better refinement and modern technology. As a daily performance machine, it was unparalleled at the time, and still attracts an enthusiastic following today – making it a popular and collectible car.
This particular example is one of the later ‘Evolution’ or ‘Evo’ models, benefitting from the larger and more powerful 3.2-litre inline-six engine. Mated here to a manual transmission, it offers tractable and engaging performance, even by modern standards. Add to that this model’s practical four-door saloon layout and good history, and you have the makings of a very attractive modern classic.

The Interior
- Handsome dark grey leather presents in good order, with no significant damage or wear we could see
- The seats look to have worn in nicely, with some creaking and light wear, but no sagging or tears apparent
- Dark grey carpets and complementary floor mats show well, with some light wear evident
- The headliner looks to be secure and undamaged – we saw no sagging or staining
- Wood trim to the doors, centre console and doors appears to be damage free
- Electric windows and door mirrors

- As far as we can see, all the trim and switchgear presents well, with some blemishes and wear, but no more than you would expect
- The boot space is trimmed with dark grey carpet and also contains a jack and the standard toolkit
The Exterior
- Bright red paintwork, which appears to be free from any notable marks
- The bodywork shows well, looking to be free from corrosion or obvious damage
- All of the external trim seems to be present and correct, with some wear and fading from age, but only what is commensurate with the mileage and age of the vehicle
- What we could see of the underneath looked nice and solid – we note the underside appears to have been undersealed for protection
- The car is fitted with 17-inch ‘Style 23’ alloys, which look to be in decent order, with some fading to the centre badges and a little wear, but nothing significant we could see
The Mechanics
- 3,201cc naturally-aspirated inline-six
- Six-speed manual transmission
- We’re told the car benefits from a recently fitted new water pump and thermostat
- Overall, the engine bay looks very tidy, with no evidence of issues we could identify
- The vendor reports no mechanical faults with the vehicle
Summary
When it comes to stylish, practical daily transport that can also show you a good time when the twisty sections of tarmac arrive, the E36 M3 takes some beating. In desirable ‘Evo’ specification and with a solid history, this looks to be a fine example that should make a very fine retro daily.
