Background

The Honda TN360 is a prime example of quality Japanese design and engineering. The basis of extremely small design with massive practicality and capability is no more prevalent than in these little trucks. The successor to the T360, the TN360 was available in pickup form, as well as various covered panel van variants. It sported a 354cc 2 cylinder engine as opposed to the more complicated 4 cylinder engine in the prior T360.
The TN360 went through various forms and changes throughout its production span, it was in 1975 that the TN7 was introduced, near identical to the TNV of 1972 in terms of aesthetics, the TN7’s main difference came in the form of its engine, which featured more emissions equipment in order to comply with Japanese regulations. The truck stayed in production until 1977, with 700,000 being made and adored by those in need of a quality work truck.

History

First registered in 1977, making it one of the last TN7’s made, the last owner had this vehicle in his ownership from 1983 and kept this vehicle in storage since 1986 as due to personal circumstances stopped using it, it has remained in dry storage over for 35 years and remarkably on the click of a button started by the mechanic once the service parts and the petrol was renewed.

The vehicle is now fully functional and drivable and has had over £4000 spend on stock parts being flown in from Indonesia and fitted by a trusted professional mechanic.

Investigation would suggest that the vehicle has had some modification work done by previous owners.

Paperwork

Documentation suggests that the previous owner of the vehicle has been the registered keeper since 1983. The truck does not hold a current MOT, as it doesn't require MOT but there's an early MOT certificate from 1985. It's registered as a historic vehicle meaning no road tax, no ULEZ and congestion charge.

The V5 will need to be obtained via filling out the necessary DVLA form at the post office. There's an original Honda Acty owners manual that accompanies the vehicle.

The Interior

The small stylish cabin of the TN7 is pure 1970’s nostalgia, a sea of oranges and browns can be seen from every angle, most notably on the bench seat which has been covered in a soft striped blanket style material.

The dashboard, steering wheel and gauges look to be in remarkably original condition, while a little dirty through lack of use, they appear to be incredibly solid, with the black plastics appearing to be largely free from wear and cracks, as does the large imposing steering wheel. The lights on the gauges are all illuminated when the ignition is turned on.

There is also a radio cassette player sat in the centre of the dash among the other knobs, switches and pull levers, these all look to be in good condition as well.
The door cards are also of a good condition and hold the window winding mechanisms which fully function, however the rubber window seals that sit on the door are missing. The cabin floor has been painted in a red oxide paint under the fitted black rubber mats, most likely in order to prevent any rust developing or progressing further.

Below the dash we also find a Selmar electronic alarm system that appears to have been fitted by a previous owner along with an air horn which sits behind the bodywork of the truck.

The Exterior

This little truck is in need of some maintenance and care to bring it up to a standard the truck deserves. It seems as though the originally white truck was treated to a respray in a shade of orange at some point in its life, this hasn’t been done to the highest of standards and thus it does show signs of peeling and wear, with the original white paintwork protruding through in areas (it is still registered with the DVLA as being white as well). The inside of the box body and cabin are predominantly white still, with just some orange paintwork and overspray on show.
On top of the cab, we find the rather uncommon addition of a sunroof, this fully functions and has been well fitted around the headlining of the truck. Additionally, the roof of the cab and box body have been covered in a vinyl style material, this is not in a great condition having begun to peel off in large quantities, and will likely need to be fully removed.
Corrosion has taken a bit of a toll on the little truck, there are a great deal of rust patches and holes dotted around the exterior bodywork. Predominantly we see this corrosion around the doors and cab corners, however the underside does appear to be in a good shape. The trim and brightwork on the truck does show signs of age and pitting, but the grille up front has been reconditioned and is of an excellent standard.
Although the exterior of the box body on the back does have corrosion as well, the insides and bed of the truck are in a very solid state. Both the rear tailgate and sliding door on the box open and function well, there is however, a spare side door with the truck.

You will note the black shiny panels placed in the rear of the van, they have just come back from being given a treatment of sandblasting and then a coat of black paint and are ready to be screwed under back on in the lot necessary places underneath the vehicle, once theses various under panels have been screwed back on then the only other job I left to do is the upper body work such as adding the choice of spray painting,
The truck sits on 4 steel wheels that do have some surface corrosion, but are in good shape. It also boasts its original spare wheel which sits in a hangar on the side.

The Mechanics

With the current owner having tasked local mechanics to give the truck a refresh, mechanically is where this TN7 really shines, the mighty two cylinder 354cc motor fires into life immediately and settles well into an idle, driving well and running comfortably through the gears.

A full service has been carried out with the following parts fitted:

- New exhaust New fuel pump
- New contact breaker
- New brake master cylinder
- New rear shocks
- New coil pack with HT leads
- New spark plugs
- New fuel filter

The vendor describes that the brakes will need attention as the pads have not been renewed and therefore before taking this car on a long journey these will need to be serviced.
The engine itself looks to be clean and in great shape and now sports a rather rare reconditioned factory exhaust, which can be seen sitting proudly at the rear, providing a great tone when the engine is running. The truck also comes with a hoard of reconditioned cooling system parts.

The bottom of the vehicle once the panels have been fitted will make the bottom literally new with the addition of the new exhaust and shocks having also been recently fitted, you can see this project is a perfect winter project as most jobs have already taken place and now the new enthusiast can have the paint applied to the choice.

The Appeal

With only a handful believed to be left in the country, this is an incredibly rare opportunity to acquire a wonderful truck in need of a little tlc. With the truck starting running and driving, a great deal of the hard work has already been done.

What this truck needs now is a devoted owner to set the bodywork right and bring this truck back to its former glory.
