NO RESERVE - 1975 Volkswagen “Bay Window” Camper Van Project (T2)

Highlights

  • An example of the popular T2 Bay Window van in camper configuration
  • Complete with concertina style pop top for added usability
  • Already fitted with a range of camper furniture

The Appeal

The T2 became the second generation of VW’s flexible, forward-control commercial vehicle platform in 1967. Building on the success of the split-screen, series 1 versions, the “bay window” T2 was slightly bigger and more sophisticated in many respects. The engine was bigger too with a 1.6L flat-four, horizontally opposed engine now sitting out under the rear hatch.
This example is an unfinished project but could represent a good foundation for completion in either day van or full camper format. Some work has been completed but the bodywork clearly requires finishing. The current owner reports that the mechanical condition is sound and that the van starts, runs and stops.

The History and Paperwork

  • This example is a UK supplied and specification vehicle
  • It was first registered in the UK in August 1975
  • The VW has passed through the hands of 12 former keepers
  • The van has had a number of colour changes during that time
  • The last change to its current red and cream was in 2009
  • The camper was acquired by its current owner in 2020
  • It was taken on as a project vehicle
  • A change of circumstance now necessitates a sale
  • The paperwork is limited but includes the current V5
  • This is in the name of the current owner and classifies the van as a Historic Vehicle
  • As such it is MOT and VED exempt
  • An invoice is also on-hand for the close weave mat set

The Interior

  • The camper’s cab is standard T2 fare in an unfinished condition
  • The seats appear original and are finished in blue, textured fabric
  • This requires cleaning but appears unripped and complete
  • The dashboard is finished in black
  • The familiar three, recessed gauge recesses sit behind the wheel
  • Two gauges are fitted, a VDO speedometer and a matching multi-purpose gauge
  • The steering wheel is the original, black two spoke item
  • The door cards are finished in white vinyl
  • Surface mounted speakers are set into these
  • The cab floor is currently uncovered with not mat or carpet fitted
  • A glass, pop-up sunroof is fitted to the cab roof
  • No headlining is currently fitted
  • A number of loose wires are evident under the dashboard
  • The rear cabin of the camper is fitted with a range of furniture
  • This incudes a kitchen unit with storage under but no appliances
  • The underpinnings of a bench seat are present but without cushions
  • A buddy seat frame is present
  • A concertina type pop-top is fitted to the roof of the rear cabin
  • This appears to include the hammock bed fittings
  • Behind the bench seat is the generous luggage compartment
  • A spare wheel is vertically mounted in this area
  • The close weave mats and other pieces of trim can be seen stored here, too
  • Other spares noted are a Sony head unit and some VW badges

The Exterior

  • The exterior of the camper is clearly a work in progress
  • This will ultimately need improving or completing by a new owner
  • The owner attests to have taken care of all the most severe rust
  • The camper has been left in filler with some minor surface rust noted
  • Some of the red and cream paintwork is cracking and ideally needs removing
  • A thorough external repaint would seem the best solution going forward
  • The concertina top looks to be in decent order but in need of a good clean
  • Some daylight can be seen through the corners so some patching may be required
  • The cabin glass and light lenses all appear to be in good, original order
  • The van sits on painted 14-inch steel wheels
  • These are fitted with the correct chromed, domed hub caps
  • The tyres appear to exhibit a good level of tread
  • They may need to be replaced, however, on an age basis before road use

The Mechanics

  • This VW T2 appears to be fitted with the 1.6L four-cylinder boxer engine
  • This appears to be in mainly original fettle
  • Some new parts seem to be in evidence, however
  • The owner reports that the van starts, runs and stops
  • However, the van may need a full mechanical check over before being used
  • The underside of the van looks to be in keeping with its age and general condition
  • An electrical hook up point is noted but would require checking before use

Summary

The popularity of the VW vans, busses and campers has endured right through from the original Type 2 split screen van right up to the current models. The T2, Bay Window camper’s stock is definitely rising as the original vans have skyrocketed in price. The Bay Window examples still represent decent value and benefit from lots of support groups, specialist suppliers and parts availability.
This example should be seen as a work in progress but seems to posses more positives than is immediately obvious on reviewing the photographs. If the unfinished paintwork was attended to it would immediately transform this example into a camper that just requires a bit of interior tidying. The mechanical condition is hard to judge but the owner hasn’t reported anything significant that needs immediately addressing. As such it provides an exciting opportunity for the new owner to configure a VW camper of their own finish and specification.
